FMRL: Gustardo's Prove It All Night Free Music Isn't Free Festival of Musical Freedom featuring:

::Ralph E. White
ralphwhite.bandcamp.com/
"Ralph E White was a member of well-loved punk bluegrass outfit Bad Livers but his solo work is possessed of a much more lonesome spark, exaggerating the implied drone at the heart of the music of Dock Boggs and The Stanley Brothers. "Navasota River Devil Squirrel" was originally released as a CD-R in 2007, but this limited vinyl version comes courtesy of fellow musical loner Joshua Burkett's new imprint. White plays wooden six-string banjo, violin, accordion and kalimba and his voice has a high, eerie quality to it that allows it to blend with the various primitive strategies that the music employs to reanimate traditional and original material alike. The use of kalimba situates aspects of the sound in some avant hillbilly fourth world, while the combination of dense matrices of string and White's transporting vocal is extremely psychedelic."

::Simon Joyner + the Ghosts (Omaha, NE)
"Simon Joyner is a renowned American singer-songwriter who first came to prominence during the Lo-Fi movement of the early 90's alongside contemporaries mining similar territory like Will Oldham, Peter Jefferies, the Mountain Goats, and Bill Callahan. Joyner
was championed early by the late British DJ, John Peel, who famously played Joyner's 1994 LP, "The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll", start to finish on one of his BBC programs, initially making Joyner more well known overseas than in his own country.

Following the mercurial path of heroes like Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Joyner has been releasing literate and challenging albums
since the release of his first album, Room Temperature, in 1993. His
discography includes twenty-three full-length recordings, as well as numerous singles and guest appearances. A book of his lyrics was released in 2016 under the title "Only Love Can Bring You Peace: Selected Lyrics (1990-2014)." He tours the United States and Europe semi-regularly and is the co-owner of the Grapefruit Records label."

"Omaha has given us the reigning heir to Henry Miller's dark emotional mirror, Townes Van Zandt's three-chord moan, and Lou Reed's warehouse minimalism: his name is Simon Joyner." — Gillian Welch

"Pound for pound Simon Joyner is my favorite lyricist of all time. He
has shades of all the greats (Van Zandt, Cohen, Dylan) but exists in a space all his own ... He truly is an American songwriting treasure. It is my hope that more people will discover his music and share in the unique joy that it brings." — Conor Oberst

"Simon's always been a secret handshake amongst me and my peers. He's a pioneer. He's helped pave the way for many people, myself included. He's an artist in its purest form--for his only concern is crafting a perfect song--which he's done time and time again." ---Kevin Morby

"Adam Ostrar is a parent, maybe just like you, that worries about the world his kid is inheriting. He lives in an over-priced city (Austin, TX), drinks too much coffee (a bottomless cup), and suffers from insomnia (don’t try to tell him this might be related to the former) and etc. He’s anxious about the damaged and ravaged U.S. of A. You know, that country no one ever thought was perfect, but never knew how bad it could get. This Waking Nightmare (Trump thinks this is what “woke” means, I hear...) is what subjects the various narrators in his new album, The Worried Coat (out April 5th 2019 on Super Secret Records).

Before the 2016 election, an album like this might be called a “dystopia”; now we call it “did you see what he tweeted?” On Ostrar’s new album, he weaves together disparate voices, like a non-fiction version of Our Town written by Wyatt (Robert), not Wilder (Thornton). There’s no “good guys” or “bad guys”; there’s no “white hats” and “black hats”; there’s no “red” and “blue”. There’s just a lot of under- medicated neuroses bringing out nastiness and empathy in these sonorous participants. Or, as Ostrar explains when nudged for a TV Guide asterisked pick-of-the-week summation, “It’s twelve narratives on otherness, self-identity, and our personal relationships with anxiety. How we often betray our best intentions through willful ignorance.”

Ostrar creates these characters over the course of 12 songs, each wearing a different hat: In “Alex the Cretin” you hear the evangelical snake-oil salesman high on Wizard A True Star-era Rundgren; “Bloody Waves” is the Bossa Nova buoy of a refugee’s displacement; in “Kansas City,” we hear Kevin Ayers, as Joe the Plumber, looking backwards on his false nostalgia; “Stormed the Beach” is the sound of Cluster employed by Greenpeace; “Walk the Savages Home” is the gurgle of Nativism and Corruption; And in “Morning Said,” Ostrar drops his tuning down to D and fills the page with pre-Page accent riffs while speaking to our forgotten good intentions.

Recorded in part in Mexico City courtesy of Richard Davies (The Moles) hand-me-down studio time and the other half at a ranch in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, Ostrar wrapped and warped his Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar around these groovy nuggets of capitalistic despair, cretinism, gas lighting, nationalism and nativism, false heroism, and that good-time tug-of-war (psssst, this game is rigged) called Inherited Wealth vs. Inherited Debt. But he wasn’t alone in making this album, so don’t worry too much about him. He brought along Michael Krassner (Boxhead Ensemble, Lofty Pillars), Wil Hendricks (Califone, Simon Joyner), and Stephen Patterson (Hamilton Leithauser, White Rabbits).

This is Ostrar’s second solo album, the follow-up to 2017’s Brawls In the Briar. Before that, he led the early 2000 shag-carpet art-punk of Manishevitz, an early Jagjaguwar band that toured with The Mountain Goats and Edith Frost before the Internet tracked these things. When he isn’t stressing out, you can find him teaching guitar and Ubering to gigs in Austin, Texas. Some days he has a beard, some days he doesn’t. The Worried Coat is Ostrar at his best even though 2018 wasn’t the best year. So take your own Worried Coat out of the closet and bundle up with him. It’s getting colder."

"Luke Polipnick is a creative guitarist, composer, and educator in Omaha, Nebraska.

He is originally from Minneapolis, MN, a city whose influence is noticeable in his unselfconscious genre-blurring and emphasis on the collective “band” ethos. His writing and playing display an emotive intensity and density that is balanced by plainly spoken, angular lyricism. Luke’s music is an interpretation of the jazz diaspora distilled through free improvisational process and Americana, pop, electronica, and global folkloric vernaculars."

:: Larry Ochs-Nels Cline-Gerald Cleaver Trio
cleanfeed-records.com/product/what-is-to-be-done/
www.ochs.cc/groups/cline-cleaver-ochs.html

"Within the greater universe of sound lies the interstellar sound-space called improvised music. And it is from within this specific interstellar sound-space that music lovers discover the interplanetary system wherein Nels Cline, Gerald Cleaver, and Larry Ochs mind-meld their sonic energies for each unique concert. Expect the music to be focused and energized. Know that these sound explorers -- veterans of decades of improvised music -- will be doing their utmost to raise the bandstand, and you with it.

Guitarist Nels Cline, drummer Gerald Cleaver, and saxophonist Larry Ochs are three experimental icons, individually and collectively drawing upon the outer limits of free jazz, structured improvisation and bicoastal noise punk.

The trio’s first CD – What Is To Be Done - released on Clean Feed in February 2019.

The Trio actually began as a duo of Ochs and Cleaver, premiering at Ochs’ week of concerts at The Stone in New York in September 2014. Ochs was so taken by the musical possibilities which this duo first explored at The Stone that he vowed to play at least one concert a year with Mr. Cleaver, whenever Ochs passed through NY. Cline and Ochs, both living in California, had known each other for decades; Cline has been featured since 2003 in Rova”s Electric Ascension bands. In winter 2015, on one of Nels’ visits to Ochs’ home base of Berkeley, the two had had a conversation that ended with a run-down of some upcoming concerts. Ochs mentioned an upcoming duo concert with Cleaver and raved about the first one. Nels took a look at his calendar and asked how Ochs would feel if he joined the duo, as he too had always wanted to play with Cleaver. As a result, the trio was born in Brooklyn in May 2015. The music that night was exciting; it hinted at all kinds of possibilities and was a fun challenge. Ochs determined that night to keep this trio purely for pleasure, to only play concerts that were easy to book, where the promoter was genuinely excited right from the downbeat. The trio has since performed 12 concerts in the northeast and midwest USA, including sets where the trio expanded to a quartet adding Marshall Allen (in Philadelphia), and (in Baltimore) to a sextet with the additions of Michael Formanek, Hank Roberts and Ches Smith. The three look forward to performing annually in the USA when all are available at the same time. Next up, in April 2019, looking forward to seven special shows in the southeast!

“Cleaver — one of the most versatile percussionists alive—is perfect for this configuration. He adroitly shifts gears between everything from feather-stroke delicacy to rocklike tribal thumping to direct flow-and-response to his partners. As heard on a live recording Ochs shared with me, the drummer masterfully feeds the trio’s front line, which enhances its proclivity for stealthily switching functions; Cline might shape a hovering drone only to counter the loosely coiled tenor spell cast by Ochs with a sudden surge of pedal-enhanced mayhem. Elsewhere the guitarist constructs lapidary patterns, injecting his tone with an acidic bite, yet progressing with a calming patience that is caressed and shadowed by terse sax figures. The pair’s steeplechase machinations develop with an organic flow that is exhilarating as it moves from the lyric to the chaotic, the serene to the explosive.”
Peter Margasak, The Chicago Reader (11/30/2017)

GERALD CLEAVER (drums) is a product of Detroit’s rich music tradition. Inspired by his father, drummer John Cleaver, he began playing the drums at an early age and, as a teenager, gained invaluable experience playing with Detroit jazz masters Ali Muhammad Jackson, Lamont Hamilton, Earl Van Riper and Pancho Hagood. While majoring in music education at the University of Michigan, he was awarded a Jazz Study Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to study with drummer Victor Lewis. After graduation, he began teaching in Detroit, where he worked with Rodney Whitaker, Marcus Belgrave, Donald Walden and with visiting musicians Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, Ray Bryant, Eddie Harris, Diana Krall and Don Byron. In 1995 he accepted an appointment as assistant professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Michigan, and in 1998 also joined the jazz faculty at Michigan State University. He moved to New York in 2002. He has performed or recorded with Roscoe Mitchell, Matt Shipp, William Parker, Craig Taborn, Charles Gayle, Jeremy Pelt, Tomasz Stanko, Charles Lloyd and Miroslav Vitous, among others. Cleaver has released four recordings as a leader and leads the bands Black Host and Uncle June.

Guitar explorer NELS CLINE is best known these days as the lead guitarist in the band Wilco. His recording and performing career – spanning jazz, rock, punk and experimental – is well into its fourth decade, with over 200 recordings, including at least 30 for which he is leader. Cline has received many accolades including Rolling Stone anointing him as both one of 20 “new guitar gods” and one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Cline’s most recent release, Lovers, out now on Blue Note Records, is a collection of “mood music” over 20 years in the making. Beyond Wilco, Cline performs in a duo project with jazz guitar prodigy Julian Lage in addition to a quartet The Nels Cline Four (that includes Lage plus bassist Scott Colley and drummer Tom Rainey. Cline also performs in CUP, a duo with wife and musical collaborator Yuka Honda (Cibo Matto) and leads The Nels Cline Singers (featuring Scott Amendola, bassist Trevor Dunn and Cyro Baptista). www.nelscline.com

LARRY OCHS (saxophones) is best known as a founder of the Rova Sax Quartet, a San Francisco institution that focused right from the start on the application of improvisational strategies within the context of contemporary compositions, beginning in the late 1970s and continuing right up to the present day; 40 years old in 2018. Equally inspired by modernist 20th century composition and the more worldly, abrasive strands of 60s free jazz as well as by fellow pioneers around the globe, Rova and Ochs became widely celebrated for the lengths they would go to stretch the performance parameters of notated music through early collaborations with Henry Kaiser, Anthony Braxton, and John Zorn. Ochs connection with Cline began in the late 1990’s and culminated with the Celestial Septet, a band comprised of both Rova and the “Nels Cline Singers,” with a fantastic CD release (New World Records) including a long, ecstatic Ochs composition, as well as tours from 2009 – 2011. Ochs and Cleaver have performed off and on as a duo since 2013. A duo CD release – a beautiful , haunting set of music called “Songs of the Wild Cave” (Nov. 2018) – documents their 2016 live-recording experience inside a secret cave in the Dordogne area of France; a cave that contains upwards of 150 Pleistocene-era paintings. It’s a unique recording in which the cave itself seriously influenced the music, becoming essentially the third member of a trio. Ochs’ many other bands and a select discography can be perused and heard at www.ochs.cc

::Rodger Coleman
rodgercoleman.bandcamp.com/
www.nuvoidjazz.com/

"Rodger Coleman began piano lessons at the age of seven, eventually studying for eight years with Dr. Allen Brings, composer and professor of music at Queens College of the City University of New York. In public school, he studied clarinet and other woodwinds under the direction of Gary Sousa, studied music theory, and sang in the choir under William Fletcher. Moving on to the New England Conservatory of Music, Coleman studied “Third Stream” music with Ran Blake, Hankus Netsky, and Bob Moses amongst others. After falling in love with punk rock in the mid-eighties, Coleman picked up the electric guitar, taking lessons with Mick Goodrick and experimenting with fellow NEC students in a punk/jazz hybrid that would eventually become UYA (a/k/a Upstanding Young Americans).

In 1990, UYA recorded their self-titled CD, which was nominated for a Boston Music Award in 1991 and they performed regularly around the Boston area as well as in New York City, including several gigs at the Knitting Factory and a shared bill with the nascent Medeski Martin & Wood at The Cooler (now defunct). While a follow up album failed to materialize, UYA’s punk/jazz rendition of Sun Ra’s “Dancing Shadows” appears on Wavelength Infinity: A Tribute To Sun Ra and is still available on Rastascan Records.

After the band split apart, Coleman and his wife moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he re-discovered the piano and continued to make occasional music with UYA drummer, Sam Byrd, who had relocated to Richmond, Virginia. The duo has since released a limited edition vinyl LP (Cosmologies, 2012) as well as a number of critically acclaimed CD and digital-only releases via Bandcamp. As Coleman’s home studio has gradually been filled with various synthesizers and gadgets, their music moved in a more abstract, electronic direction and prompted a number of solo releases from Coleman over the past few years.

Jazzwise Magazine has described the Coleman/Byrd duo as “a weaponized version of The Necks or The Dead C sieving through the wreckage of Jack Vance’s post-apocalyptic dystopias” while aptly comparing Coleman’s recent solo work to sonic compatriots, Common Objects and Supersilent. Though he rarely gigs these days, Coleman has sporadically performed around Nashville both with Sam Byrd and solo shows on processed electric guitar. On April 17, Coleman will debut his portable, “mini-modular” synthesizer setup in a performance of improvised electronics at Little Harpeth Brewing, opening for the amazing supergroup of The Larry Ochs/Nels Cline/Gerald Cleaver Trio. With these unconventional and unpredictable instruments, Coleman has finally found his voice, outside of the confines of and limitations of the piano and guitar, to create a wholly unique and personal soundworld."

New York City based songwriter Gary Canino, submits to you a generous collection of country-inflected music under the Dark Tea moniker that honor the past while looking ahead. There is, as they say, a little something for everyone. With Dark Tea, Gary emerges as a scientist does from her lab, having cracked the formula. The formula? Honor the listeners’ desire for both danger and comfort. And so, when a melody starts to wander from the marked trail, Gary soothes the listener’s ear with a simple one-four (“Variable Reward”). And so, when ambling verse figure disorients the listener, it repeats until she feels at home in it (“The Bird’s Nest”). And so, a long verse finds punctuation in a tasteful punchy chorus (“No Notifications”). The album also contains no fewer than three truly great guitar solos, including one from Meg Duffy’s Hand Habits on “Rollin’ Back The Dial”.

poonvillage.bandcamp.com/album/the-feudal-spirit
www.facebook.com/robmnoyes/
soundcloud.com/robnoyes

"Rob Noyes has been on the Eastern Massachusetts scene for a while, but what we've heard him play is music from within the context of electric bands, most of whom are loud as hell and exist somewhere along the rim of the post-core continuum. More recently, Rob has taken to displaying his solo acoustic guitar chops and they are massive. The Feudal Spirit is the first vinyl evidence of their 'shoulders.' Like Western Mass's Tony Pasquarosa, who mines the same widely-variant style-pits, Rob's approach to acoustic playing resembles his electric work only through shared-belief-in-a-strong-downstroke. On the way to developing his own compositional/performance approach, Noyes sometimes seems to have absorbed an almost infinite reservoir of influences. Apart from some superb Basho-like 12-string tunneling, most momentary fragments tend to recall legendary Limeys like John Renbourn (and through him, Davey Graham), because Rob's overt melodic structures tend towards the non-bluesoid. But then you'll maybe hear a note-sequence spiced like something dropped from the hot strings of Michael Chapman or even a powerful throng that makes you think of Wizz Jones. When that happens, you realize there's more of a blues base to some of the songs than you'd been able to untangle. Mr. Noyes hits a vast array of sub-genres on this album, and he hits them all pretty damn hard. Rob's playing carries the weight of many possibly-imaginary forebears, but the way he smears them all together shows a holistic mastery of touch and imagination that defies a lot of today's players, who tend to shine in short bursts, then allow their dreams to outrun their technique. Rob Noyes has no such apparent limitations. Like Raymond Pettibon, whose artwork graces The Feudal Spirit's cover, Rob's able to create a true form-gobble, making some real beautiful noise in the process. Around the world, licensed Hodologists whisper, 'Make mine Noyes.' Why don't you join them?" --Byron Coley, October 23rd, 2016, South Deerfield, MA.

John Dikeman and Ava Mendoza in soli and duo.

John Dikeman is an American saxophonist residing in Amsterdam since 2008. He'd spent the previous four years in Cairo, Egypt working as a full-time musician and music instructor. He plays in a flowing Ayleresque vocalizing style that is also equipped with a Trevor Watts sensibility...melodic and flowing even when grating and textural. Like Sharrock on guitar. So the prospect of Dikeman and Ava Mendoza, one of the great new voices in jazz guitar and free improvisation. Some folks may know Ava Mendoza from her group Unnatural Ways. Some may have seen her perform with Violent Femmes as a touring member. She has also collaborated with a wide range of artists including Carla Bozulich, Fred Frith, Mick Barr, Nels Cline, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Mike Watt, Matana Roberts, Ikue Mori, Matt Mitchell, Adele Bertei, William Hooker, Jon Irabagon, members of Caroliner, and Jessica Pavone.

Whitley Hill was born and raised in New York City, the child of two actors who met doing summer stock. Her mother was a cotton farmer’s daughter from Mississippi. Her dad was the son of Armenian immigrants who settled in the mountains of West Virginia. It was an interesting mix.

Whit plays a Martin guitar and loves it very much. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, Al Hill – a keyboardist, guitarist and singer who is music director for soul diva Bettye Lavette. Between them, Whit and Al have three wonderful children.

Random facts about Whit: her Armenian grandfather owned a saloon called the Sanitary Lunch. She once delivered a friend’s baby by herself; this was unplanned. Her dad was on the Sopranos. She collects coincidences, loves her dogs, teaches dance to the sweet children of East Nashville, and is a proud, card-carrying member of the Middle Tennessee Metal Detecting Club."

::Susan Alcorn
www.susanalcorn.net/

"One of the world’s premier exponents of her instrument, Susan Alcorn has taken the pedal steel guitar far beyond its traditional role in country music. Having first paid her dues in Texas country & western bands, she began to expand the vocabulary of her instrument through her study of 20th century classical music, visionary jazz, and world musics.

Though known as for her solo work, she has collaborated with numerous artists including Pauline Oliveros, Chris Cutler, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, Nate Wooley, Ingrid Laubrock and Leila Bourdreuil, Evan Parker, Michael Formanek, Zane Campbell, and Mary Halvorson among others.

In 2016, she was voted "Best Other Instrument" by the International Critics Poll. In 2017 she received the Baker Artist Award, and in 2018, along with saxophonist Joe McPhee, she was the recipient of the Instant Award in Improvised Music.

The UK Guardian writes, “As an improvisor and composer, Alcorn has proven to be visionary. Her pieces reveal the complexity of her instrument and her musical experience while never straying from a very direct, intense, and personal musical expression.”

www.deeplistening.org/site/content/susan-alcorn

"Susan Alcorn began playing the pedal steel guitar over 25 years ago, and in that time has evolved into a musician/composer of such rare inspiration that her music has redefined, for many, the very perception of the instrument itself.

As a child in the 1950's and 1960's she was surrounded by the big-band music that her parents listened to as well as the pop music that blared on her radio. She picked up the guitar when she was thirteen, and soon began playing slide guitar (inspired in particular by Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Son House) and dobro (her favorites were Mike Auldridge, Josh Graves, and Tut Taylor). A few years later, she began playing the pedal steel guitar and performed regularly with country-western bands in Texas.

Although Alcorn's initial work with pedal steel focused on the styles of the players usually associated with it - namely, country and western swing, she was at the same time profoundly influenced by John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and 20th Century classical composers such as Messaien, Penderecki, and Piazzolla. By the late 1980s, after performing straight-ahead jazz for ten years, she took the advice of Paul Bley, with whom she had been corresponding; she "threw away the real book" and began to develop a truly distinct approach to the instrument - one that incorporates jazz, minimalism, Gamelan Music, Indian Classical music, the folk music of Latin America, to name but a few of the catalysts.

Although Susan Alcorn typically plays solo, she has collaborated in performance with electronic composer Pauline Oliveros, German bassist Peter Kowald, and multi-instrumentalist Eugene Chadbourne. "Uma", her debut CD, was released on the US label Loveletter Recordings in the summer of 2000, and a CD of recordings with Chadbourne, "Texas Music", was released on Chadbourne's own imprint soon afterward.

"Shane Parish is the guitarist for the celebrated avant-rock band Ahleuchatistas (Tzadik / International Anthem / Cuneiform). His electric guitar works are intense environments, exposed to the elements, and populated by assorted creatures. As an acoustic soloist, he creatively interprets and deconstructs folk music and jazz tunes, plays original cutting-edge poly-rhythmic and contrapuntal works, and transforms the instrument, via preparations and detuning, into a mini-percussion ensemble, banging out pulsating rhythmic trances reminiscent of John Cage's prepared solo piano works. Parish's 2016 collection of folk interpretations Undertaker Please Drive Slow (Tzadik Records) was described by composer John Zorn as "reminiscent of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, at times of John Cage and Morton Feldman, Shane uses these beautiful songs as launching pads for his creative flights of fancy, at times boiling them down to their very essence. A spiritual project that will keep you riveted from first note to last.” His latest releases are Child Asleep in the Rain (Nullzone Tapes), December (self-released), Autodidact (Humanhood Recordings), and a duo album with guitarist Wendy Eisenberg called Nervous Systems (Verses Records)."

Balancing textured layers of juicy synthesizers, gritty beats, and tectonic bass with spirited, stormy vocals, synthesist Eric Hnatow and vocalist Haley Morgan create a visceral sonic landscape that feels equal parts cosmic, fleshy and electric. Emerging from the vibrant Western Mass music scene, Home Body plays with form and improvisation while retaining a dreamy pop sensibility and demanding presence. ::Tatsuya Nakatani (Truth Or Consequences, NM)

"Tatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde sound artist, composer, and master percussionist originally from Osaka, Japan. Based in the USA since 1994, he lives in Truth or Consequences, NM. Since the late 1990’s, Nakatani has released over 80 recordings in the USA and Europe and has toured extensively; performing solo, in collaboration with other artists, and with his large ensemble project - the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. He presents masterclasses, workshops, and lectures across the USA and around the world.

Nakatani’s approach to music is visceral, non-linear and intuitively primitive, expressing an unusually strong spirit while resisting genre. He creates sound with both traditional and extended percussion techniques. Utilizing his adapted bowed gong, drums, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects and bells, as well as various sticks, kitchen tools, and his breath he manifests an intense and organic music that represents a very personal sonic world. His approach is steeped in the sensibilities of free improvisation, experimental music, jazz, metal and noise, and yet retains the sense of space and quiet beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music. His percussive instruments can imitate the sound of a trumpet, a stringed instrument, an electronic device…to the extent that it becomes difficult to recognize the source of the sound. He has devoted himself to a musical aesthetic where rhythm gives way to pulse, often in a way that is not always audible or visible, in currents that incorporate silence and texture. Nakatani’s primary music activities include solo percussive performance, his Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO), and collaborations with musicians and dancers both in live performance and recordings.

Tatsuya Nakatani has spent the last 20 years traveling and performing extensively throughout the United States and beyond. His constant touring fosters the raw and fresh quality in his music which can only survive through an open willingness to share energy, culture, music and self on a global human scale."

::MISSISSIPPI RECORDS AMERICAN TOUR 2019
FEATURING: A COSMIC AND EARTHLY HISTORY OF RECORDED MUSIC ACCORDING TO MISSISSIPPI RECORDS
SHORT FILMS by RAW MUSIC INTERNATIONAL

A mix of film, audio, slides and lecture presented by Mississippi Records founder Eric Isaacson. This presentation attempts to tell the entire history of recorded music in 90 minutes - from the first star being born to the current age of bizarre technology. A psychedelic and entertaining approach is favored over anything academic.

Subjects covered will include the cosmic patterns that resemble music generated by stars being born and dying, the untold early history of recording technology (including tales of Archeoacoustic technology that allows us to hear recordings from 2,000 years or more ago, cat pianos, the phonautogram which reproduces sounds from dust and much more), the rise of blues, rock and roll, and other revolutionary American music forms and their subsequent destruction by the powers that be, and some hopeful messages about the future.

The main history presentation will be preceded by a very short segment about the Mississippi Records label featuring some footage of our favorite artists.

Mississippi Records is a store and label based in Portland, Oregon. They've released over 240 records spanning nearly every genre of music, ran a store for 15 years, and traveled the world with presentations such as this one. All of this has been done with no online presence, no promotion or advertising of any kind anywhere and no general existence in the digital world.
vimeo.com/98225284

Also featured will be a series of short films by Cyrus Moussavi (Raw Music International), including incredible performances from musicians in Mongolia, Burma, Iraq, Ukraine, Trinidad, Turkey, Kenya, Cambodia, Thailand, Zanzibar and Western Sahara.

::Frank Hurricaine
hurricanesoflove.bandcamp.com/

"When Frank Hurricane comes into a room it’s really something. As his name implies, he is impossible ignore. He has built an alarmingly nuanced lexicon out of an amazingly limited number of phrases. “Psychedelic.” “Spiritual.” “Holy.” “Gangsta.” “Pimp.” “Bro.” “Homie.” In the hands of the culture-at-large, these terms have long lost whatever literal or subcultural meaning they may have once had and are now so incredibly overused as to be stripped of any meaning whatsoever. In Frank’s hands, though, each of these words comes alive and full of varied meaning. On paper here it looks ridiculous, but in the throat of Frank Hurricane they breathe and dance in indescribable ways. There is no way to experience Hurricanes of Love, Frank’s acoustic guitar-based musical project, without surrendering to his singular and indescribable charm. His pleasant picking gives way to manic strumming, stuttering and unpredictable motifs or, hopefully, incredibly meandering verbal introductions. Frank is a wild and singular story-teller, often providing rambling preambles during his live sets that can out-last the songs themselves. Side three of this LP is called “Holy Story,” and ostensibly does nothing more than provide Frank with a platform for introducing his next song, “Moose Lake Blues.” What actually happens, though, is that where most people would simply say “I wrote this next song on tour,” Frank stretches out, providing tributaries of backstory. We meet all kinds of characters, all presented through Frank’s strange lens, and it’s a treat. It’s just as tempting to put Frank in a You Can’t Win-style hobo camp as it is to make sense of him as a post-Tim and Eric product of the psych-folk/noise-tape boom, but these sorts of categories invariably break down when confronted actual life, and Quintorian Blues is nothing else if not a report back from Frank’s actual life. You can’t throw a roach clip out the driver’s side window these days without hitting a finger-picking guitarist, but you can’t throw a star across the galaxy and hit anything like Frank Hurricane, and with those odds, how can you refuse?" -Matt Krefting Easthampton, MA 2014

Klimchak lives at the intersection of chaos and order. His composer/percussionist side builds elaborate structures of interlocking melody & rhythm. Josephine Foster

A Hawk and A Hacksaw began in 2000 in the small town of Saumur, France. Initially a solo vehicle for Neutral Milk Hotel drummer Jeremy Barnes, the main impetus of the project was to focus on the gray areas in borders of music and geography. The first album was released in 2002 by Cloud Recordings. Barnes met violinist Heather Trost in 2004 and the band became a duo. The pair has since released six albums, and toured extensively around the world. They have learned from and collaborated with some of the great musicians of Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey. The duo has been invited to tour with Swans, Calexico, Wilco, Andrew Bird, Portishead, Of Montreal and performed at Roskilde, Pitchfork Music Fest, and All Tomorrow’s Parties. They also collaborated with Iggy Pop on the reworking of a classic sea shanty.

In 2011 the band started their own label, Living Music Duplication, releasing albums by the great Turkish clarinetist Cüneyt Sepetçi, Romanian village band Bahto Delo Delo, and also Mountains of Tongues (a collection of music from the Caucasus), Thor & Friends (Swans drummer Thor Harris’ minimalist project which Barnes produced and heavily features Trost’s violin) among others. You Have Already Gone to the Other World, an album inspired by the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors was released in 2013, and the band toured art cinemas and film festivals playing a new score to the film. They were a featured act at the Transylvanian Film Festival in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and also presented the film at the London’s Barbican and The Lincoln Center in New York. In the past few years, the band has focused on recording, composing the soundtrack to a hit Albanian TV show called Skanderbeg and the video game Forest of Sleep. They also recently completed a score for a new short by critically acclaimed film maker Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio, The Duke of Burgundy). They were also featured, along with Bartók and Ligeti, for an evening of Eastern European art-music at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. The BBC Concert Orchestra played AHAAH’s original compositions and folk arrangements along with the band.

Forest Bathing the new album, features ten original compositions. The Persian Santur, an ancient type of dulcimer struck by sticks, and played by Barnes, is a feature component along with Trost’s soaring and diving violin. The duo play nearly every instrument, but have some wonderful guest musicians on a few tracks- Turkish clarinetist Cüneyt Sepetçi, Hungarian cimbalom master Unger Balász, Chicago trumpeter Sam Johnson, who often tours with the group, Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich, and New Mexico bassist Noah Martinez of the band Lone Piñon.

The band will be touring in 2018 in support of Forest Bathing.

::Brandon Seabrook Trio (NY)
brandonseabrook.bandcamp.com/album/brandon-seabrook-trio-convulsionaries
Free jazz string trio of guitarist Brandon Seabrook, cellist Daniel Levin, and upright bassist Henry Fraser
"From the idiosyncratic musical mind of guitarist/composer Brandon Seabrook comes his latest album Convulsionaries (Astral Spirits, September 2018). In his close to two decades in NYC, Seabrook has garnered international acclaim for his sui generis approach to the electric guitar, one which astounds with tremolo pyrotechnics and an entropic sensibility. While those elements are in full effect on Convulsionaries, they’re met with a mature and thorough sense of dynamics, pace, groove, and feeling. Joining Seabrook on this release are the young upright bassist Henry Fraser (Anthony Coleman, The Full Salon) and Daniel Levin(Tony Malaby, Mat Maneri), two revolutionary string players who have been working in various creative ensembles in Brooklyn for years. Together, the string trio tackles Seabrook’s thorny compositions, which perpetually surprise and unseat the listener throughout the album’s trajectory. The trio’s frightening rhythmic precision oscillates between ominous repeating ostinatos; cathartic, angular, and intricate counterpoint; and a massive dynamic range which can change in a nanosecond. Convulsionaries is the sound of three restless virtuosos, making a bold statement, guiding listeners through a gauntlet of emotional spaces with the aid of these structural assemblages, turning impending doom into a deep cathartic release."

The ultimate spiritual Texas higher-key music consisting of organic psychedelic guitar dialogue and incantatory vocal mantra. Simply put, one of the very greatest psychedelic bands of the last few decades, mostly around the core sound of guitarist Tom Carter and guitarist-vocalist Christina Carter. This is 'seeker' guitar music of the very highest order--slippery, elusive and rewarding to those who'd suspend disbelief and live for a time in the space of their sound.

Centennial Black Box Theater

::Chris Corsano
cor-sano.com/
"Chris Corsano is a drummer who has been working at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and noise music since the late 1990's. He began a long-standing, high-energy musical partnership with saxophonist Paul Flaherty in 1998. Their style, which they occasionally refer to with (semi-)tongue-in-cheek humor as "The Hated Music", infuses modern free-jazz's ecstatic collectivist spirit with the urgency and intensity of hardcore punk.

A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to concentrate on his solo music, a visceral and always spontaneously-composed amalgam of extended techniques for drum set and non-percussive instruments of his own making incorporated into his kit: e.g. violin strings stretched across drum head, and modified reed instruments that transform the drums into resonators. In February 2006, Corsano released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer, and toured extensively throughout Europe, USA, Australia, and Japan. He spent 2007 and '08 as the drummer on Björk's Volta world tour, all the while weaving in shows and recordings on his days off with the likes of Evan Parker, Virginia Genta, C. Spencer Yeh, and Jandek.

Moving back to the U.S. in 2009, Corsano returned focus to his own projects, including a duo with Michael Flower, Vampire Belt (with Bill Nace), Rangda (with Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and his solo work, further expanded in its use of contact microphones and synthesizers. In 2017, he received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artist Award.

Corsano's dedication to collective improvisation has led to collaborations with all sorts of kindred spirits and his appearance on over 150 records and 1000 live performances. He's worked with, among others: Paul Dunmall (released by the label: ESP-Disk), Joe McPhee (Roaratorio), Okkyung Lee (Open Mouth), Mette Rasmussen (Hot Cars Warp Records & Clean Feed), John Edwards (OTOroku & Dancing Wayang), Sylvie Courvoisier (Relative Pitch), Nate Wooley (No Business & Astral Spirits), Jim O'Rourke & Akira Sakata (Drag City & Polystar), Merzbow (Family Vineyard), Jessica Rylan (Load Records), Nels Cline (Strange Attractors), Heather Leigh (Volcanic Tongue), Ghédalia Tazartès (Ultra Eczema), Ken Vandermark (Audiographic), and Sunburned Hand Of Man (Manhand)."

::Tashi Dorji
Tashi Dorji is among the very best improvising guitarists in the world. He builds on Derek Bailey's vocabulary in a singular way that acknowledges the tradition of guitar-as-sound-divinator without falling into free-improv genre tropes. His playing is emotional, intuitive, virtuosic and characterized by a palpable fascination with the plasticity of sound.

::Wu Fei

Wu Fei is a master of the guzheng, a massive zither with around 28 strings and plucked with both hands like a harp. She is trained at the highest level in both composition and improvisation at China Conservatory of Music and in the United States at Mills College in Oakland where she mentored with guitarist Fred Frith. She has collaborated to great critical and popular acclaim with vocalist-banjoist Abigail Washburn, guitarist Gyan Riley and more.

Please join us in this rare opportunity to welcome two world class improvisors to the Backyard@Fond Object. Tashi and Fei will each play a solo set followed by a duo improvisational set. Do not miss this special event unlike anything you have heard!!!

Justin Greene and Elizabeth Theriot explore the intersections between spoken word, experimental sound, and improvisation. They circumvent the traditional relationships associated with their mediums, poetry and percussion, through reflection on their identities as queer artists working in traditionally masculine fields. Elizabeth uses a variety of her written works, found texts on topics from hysteria to herbalism, and freely improvised material. Justin uses drums and porcelain sheets as amplifiers for a variety of objects. Their music exists between intimate, sustained, timbral manipulations and strongly juxtaposing textures.

Justin and Elizabeth are from Louisiana and currently live in Alabama. They enjoy advocating for reproductive justice, spending time with their two beautiful cats and goofy dachshund, and searching for the perfect poached egg.

Based in Kidal in the extreme Northeast of Mali, the heart of Azawad, Amanar plays a contemporar version of the classic Tuareg guitar. Often referred to as the “desert blues” sound, Amanar is at the forefront of the modern avant-garde interpretation.

Moving from the wistful nostalgia of their predecessors, their fast interpretation of desert blues draws from a menagerie of influences. Their guitars are mixed with percussion and flute, with an introduction of drum kits, electric piano, and elements of rap. Yet above all, it is a sound that remains rooted in Kidal. As other local favorites Tinariwen and Terakaft have moved on to international careers, Amanar have emerged as a favorite of the Tuareg youth, sought after in local marriages, political campaigns, and soirees.

Under the leadership of Ahmed Ag Kaedi, the group Amanar is a collective that receives and trains willing youth, reflecting an idea at the core and history of Tuareg guitar as a vehicle to transmit ideas. Ahmed’s lyrics have evolved from the ancient calls of rebellion to the need for education in the Tuareg community, critiques of the corruption amongst the elite, and calls for the construction of a large united Mali — all ideas that Kaedi calls “the real rebellion.”

Touring throughout Africa, the group performed at Festival au Desert in 2010, earning the Prix de la Revelation, earning them a European debut at the Presenze d’Africa Festival in Florence, Italy. Their first album, “Alghafiat”, a local production recorded in Kidal, was released internationally in 2010 and their songs have been featured on various compilations and broadcasts.

The band is currently in exile throughout Mali and Algeria as the crisis in the North of Mali has forced them to leave their homes.

::Ralph E. White (Austin, TX)
www.ralphewhite.com/home
"One of our foremost instrumentalists and a true hidden American treasure, Ralph White has taken the back roads in his inspired pursuit of the ancient roots of music. The "folk/noise/avant-whatever genius" (Joe Gross, Austin Statesman) has made many strange travels as an itinerant musician and laborer. Thus his intimate, nuanced musical language has slowly revealed itself, along a path that meanders from the apple orchards of British Columbia to the villages of Zimbabwe and Namibia, from the lonesome moors of Ireland to Australia, Brittany, Peru, Louisiana and beyond. There is also the influence of White's hometown of Austin, Texas, a rich musical crossroads in and of itself.

Along with Danny Barnes and Mark Rubin, White completed the original and definitive lineup of country/bluegrass mavericks (and recent Texas Music Hall of Fame inductees) The Bad Livers. He now performs his singular blend of ancient rural folk music and original songwriting as a soloist. Since touring extensively in North America and Europe, White has kept a prolific schedule of independent releases, "where borders are erased and music is the only language" (Insound). Most recently, his "Navasota River Devil Squirrel", called "a fine navigation of the American mystery zone" (Volcanic Tongue) was reissued on vinyl LP by Mystra Records/Spirit of Orr. And in late 2009 the Resipiscent label issued his improv collaboration with San Francisco sound artist Hora Flora Sound System. New releases are scheduled for 2010, including a solo album with Austin indie Monofonus. White has also self-released limited edition works and is called on for various recording projects and film scores & appearances.

In addition to his solo work, White has recorded or performed with a diverse group of folk and avant-garde musicians: Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Jandek, Jack Rose, Eugene Chadbourne, Michelle Shocked, Sun City Girls' Sir Richard Bishop, Powell St. John and Michael Hurley. He plays fiddle in traditional Cajun dance band The Gulf Coast Playboys, and, with folk singer Amy Annelle, performs in the roots country & folk duo Precious Blood."

FMRL:GRID/Holy Mountain Top Removers/Depths & Chained

Apr 3, 7:00pm - Apr 3, 10:30pm

::GRID (NYC)
"With an approach based in free jazz, GRID takes the plunge into darker, heavier, and more psychedelic realms of improvised music. The new trio, featuring Matt Nelson (Battle Trance) on saxophone, Tim Dahl (Child Abuse) on bass, and Nick Podgurski (New Firmament;Feast of the Epiphany) on drums, harnesses the clamorous spirit of fee jazz while venturing beyond its acousitc borders through the implementation of electronic processing and dirge-like tempos akin to Doom and Sludge. Noisey calls GRID “a three-way chat. It’s a conversation between musicians with differing musical opinions, but their debut album has become a shared dialogue that is as fluid as it is improvised”.

Matt Nelson:
Brooklyn-based saxophonist Matt Nelson defies categorization in his frequent solo work and involvement with bands and projects across the musical spectrum. Employing an array of traditional and extended techniques and a frequent use of electronics and feedback has allowed him to expand on his jazz background and forge a unique musical identity that is ever-present but adaptable to a wide range of music. Speaking to this is his work with Battle Trance, tUnE-yArDs, Elder Ones, Premature Burial, and GRID. An active member of the New York experimental music scene, he is often involved in a large number of other projects as well. Recent collaborators include Ava Mendoza, Weasel Walter, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Peter Evans, Louise Jensen, and many others.

Tim Dahl:
Tim Dahl is a professional electric and double bass player, vocalist, keyboardist, and composer living in New York City since 1998. He is best known as the bass player and co-composer of the noise-rock band Child Abuse and Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus. He has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan with both groups. Tim has also performed with many notable musicians, composers and performers including Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Tatsuya Yoshida, Von Freeman, Stanley Jordan, Mary Halvorson, Malcolm Mooney, Marc Ribot, Brian Chase, Hamid Drake, Elliot Sharp, Weasel Walter, Marni Nixon etc. Tim is currently living in Brooklyn and is an active member in the music scene there.

Nick Podgurksi:
Nick Podgurski maintains New Firmament; an umbrella institute for programming, composition, listening, writing, and recording (among other practices). His musical work is manifest over dozens of recordings (and innumerable performances) in varying capacities with: Feast of the Epiphany, New Firmament, Extra Life, Yukon. Collaborators include: STATS, Geryon, Castevet, Sabbath Assembly, Andrew Smiley/Matt Kanelos. He performs here as drummer alongside Matt Nelson (saxophone) and Tim Dahl (bass)."

"Gyan Riley won his first guitar in a raffle when he was 12 years old. Shortly after learning all of the songs in his cassette collection by ear, he became the first full-scholarship graduate guitar student at the San Francisco Conservatory. Gyan's diverse work now focuses on his own compositions, improvisation, and contemporary classical repertoire. Gyan has been commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, New Music USA, the Carnegie Hall Corporation, the American Composers Forum, and the New York Guitar Festival. He has performed with Zakir Hussain, Lou Reed, John Zorn, the Kronos Quartet, Iva Bittova, the Bang-On-A-Can All-Stars, the San Francisco Symphony, the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, and his father, the composer/pianist/vocalist Terry Riley. Various tours have taken him throughout Europe, Canada, Latin America and the US, both as a soloist and in various ensembles. Gyan resides in New York City and frequently performs with the duo Probosci, the trio Eviyan, and the electric guitar quartet Dither. Gyan has four solo CD titles and many ensemble/collaborative recordings, most recently working with the Tzadik Records label in New York."

::Wu Fei
www.wufeimusic.com/
wufeimusic.bandcamp.com/
"Wu Fei is a native of Beijing and a current Nashville resident. She is a classically trained composer, master of the guzheng — the 21-string Chinese zither, and a vocalist. She plays in the guzheng's vernacular — a musical language which is at least 2,000 years old, and mixes Western classical and Chinese traditions with a contemporary, idiosyncratic sound. Her early music education was at the China Conservatory of Music, but did her Master's at Mills College and laster immersed herself in the New York downtown improvisation scene at venues like The Stone, where Fei has frequently performed and curated.

Wu Fei composes for choir, string quartet, chamber ensemble, Balinese gamelan, and orchestra; her commissions range from a composition for Percussions Claviers de Lyon that premiered in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing to live performances in Paris and Tokyo for luxury brand Hermès.

Currently, Wu Fei is the composer-in-residence for Chatterbird Ensemble. She has also been commissioned by Intersection Ensemble and individual soloists globally.

In addition to her own original compositions, Fei has collaborated with many artists of different disciplines and genres ranging, from Béla Fleck, Abigail Washburn, Billy Martin (Medeski-Martin-Wood) to avant garde composers John Zorn and Fred Frith. She has taken her guzheng and music around the world and touring highlights include composition premiere at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, the MoMA in New York City, North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, Vossa Jazz in Norway, Europalia Festival in Belgium, and the Big Ears Festival in Tennessee.

Wu Fei has released two solo records and one duo record with classical guitarist Gyan Riley. Each record exhibits both her unique solo improvisational vocabulary and her craft of composing for chamber orchestras. "Wu's work evinces respect for tradition, an interest in what instruments can do, a strong sense of architecture, and good old fashioned showmanship. " Allmusic.com reviews Wu Fei's chamber work album YUAN released on Tzadik Records."

"The Participatory Music Coalition began as the sonic subcommittee of the MB Collective, a theater, performance, visual and community collective of artists integrating diverse performative traditions, especially with respect to the South Side Community Art Center and its founder, the great spirit Margaret Burroughs. Musicians of the MB collective began participating in the weekly "Sonic Healing Ministries Free Jazz Sessions" organized and headed by composer/instrumentalist and educator David Boykin. Finding fulfillment and growth through these sessions members began to meet in each others homes to experiment, compose, and practice new music.

Recognizing the spiritual importance of Black American Classical Music, Participatory Music Coalition maintains improvisation as the very core of our creative endeavors because improvisation is the doorway to the spirit-domain, and sound is the primordial vessel of healing to the world.

Our performances proceed through journeys of sound, text, movement, poetry, song, moving images, and cuisine.Both free and planned improvisational offerings will leave plenty of space for guests to contribute and share.We encourage participation by all! By thought, word, deed, and sound, we invite you to celebrate with us the divine unity of all the cosmos that music represents. We welcome your sound, your spirit, your voice and your heartbeat!"

FMRL: Virtual Balboa/Frank Meadows/Eve Maret/Abstract Black

FMRL: Virtual Balboa/Frank Meadows/Eve Maret/Abstract Black

Mar 21, 7:00pm - Mar 21, 11:00pm

::Virtual Balboa is Zach Darrup (guitar), Evan Lipson (upright bass), and Ben Bennett (drums and percussion).

Zach Darrup is an improvising guitarist currently living in Philadelphia. During his early teenage years in the rural coal region of Pennsylvania a strange boy appeared like an angel, carrying a large cd booklet of wild musics of all sorts. This chance meeting at a pizza shop, plus tumultuous relationships with his home turf, school teachers, and other agents of law and rule enforcement led Zach to drop out and skip town, devoting himself to following music wherever it would take him--somewhere else. His techniques are informed by the musical possibilities of film language, jovial mockery and mimicry of plants, animals, and audience members, thoughtful room listening, word play, colors, and culinary experiments.

Evan Lipson (b. 1981) has operated as a musician since adolescence—intuitively seeking the liminal realms in which intellect and instinct, history and myth, and creative and destructive force intersect. Drawn towards aberrant perspectives at an early age, his formative experiences were primarily rooted in extreme and often discordant forms of rock, metal, free improvisation, modernist composition, jazz, oddball pop, soundtracks, noise, and electronic music. Massimo Ricci, of Touching Extremes writes, "Lipson easily stands among the best bassists I've heard lately, his terrifically strapping tone epitomizing the decision to really learn how an instrument works." Lipson most frequently tours with Roughhousing (including Zach Darrup and Jack Wright). He is also active with Who's Your Daddy? featuring dancer Cilla Vee/Claire Elizabeth Barratt and guitarist Davey Williams. Lipson has composed music for several films, as well as a recent collaboration with Duplex Planet-creator David Greenberger, Tyson Rogers, and Bob Stagner of the Shaking Ray Levis. He also may or may not have some degree of affiliation with an organization known as MEINSCHAFT.
www.springgardenmusic.com/Evan%20Lipson.htm

Ben Bennett has developed a unique approach to percussion which takes the lineage of free-jazz, free-improvisation, reductionism, and extended technique playing as its foundation. In searching for an expanded sonic palette, and more fluid movement between various techniques, he distilled the drumset into a small collection of drumheads, stretched membranes, and other objects which offered a wide variety of unconventional sounds from very few materials, which could be rearranged into different combinations during a performance. This aesthetic development also translates into a practical advantage, as this setup can fit into a backpack, allowing for unencumbered traveling, which Bennett has been doing actively for the past 12 years, touring North America and Europe as a soloist, and with a number of collaborators, who include Michael Foster, Jack Wright, Evan Lipson, Jacob Wick, Tashi Dorji, Leila Bordeuil, Travis Laplante, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Zach Darrup, Brandon Lopez, Nate Wooley, Aaron Zarzutski, and Arrington DeDionysio.

WXNA

Nashville, TN  37203 Map

::Sea Ship Auricle, a weekly program on WXNA 101.5 FM welcomes filmmaker and ethnomusicologist Hisham Mayet to explore the sonic archive of French ethnomusicological pioneer Charles Duvelle. Mayet controls the archives of Charles Duvelle, a vast and invaluable catalog chronicling some of the highest musical achievements of humankind.

"Disques Ocora, a French label dedicated to capturing and publishing the sounds of folkloric culture from around the world, is held in the highest possible regard in the realms of professional and amateur ethnomusicology. Instigated in 1958 by Pierre Schaeffer, the founder of musique concrète, Disques Ocora developed a sterling reputation largely for its publication of composer and musicologist Charles Duvelle's pioneering field recordings, as well as his now-iconic photographs and graphic design.

Charles Duvelle's work is indisputably one of the most important contributions to the human understanding of the rich biodiversity of our planet's music and language. In 1977, his field recordings from Benin were selected by Carl Sagan for inclusion on the Voyager Golden Records, which were carried into outer space by the Voyager spacecraft to stand as an example of humanity's highest musical expressions for the universe's unknown listeners.

This release includes 16 tracks of archival recordings (some of which have never been published before) selected and compiled by Duvelle himself. Most of the first 13 tracks, which focus on Africa, are complete versions of truncated tracks from out-of-print Ocora LPs. The final 3 tracks are focused on material from Asia, with two long tracks that have never been released before and a complete unedited version of a previously released track.
