::Chris Corsano
cor-sano.com/
"Chris Corsano is a drummer who has been working at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and noise music since the late 1990's. He began a long-standing, high-energy musical partnership with saxophonist Paul Flaherty in 1998. Their style, which they occasionally refer to with (semi-)tongue-in-cheek humor as "The Hated Music", infuses modern free-jazz's ecstatic collectivist spirit with the urgency and intensity of hardcore punk.

A move from western Massachusetts to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to concentrate on his solo music, a visceral and always spontaneously-composed amalgam of extended techniques for drum set and non-percussive instruments of his own making incorporated into his kit: e.g. violin strings stretched across drum head, and modified reed instruments that transform the drums into resonators. In February 2006, Corsano released his first solo recording, The Young Cricketer, and toured extensively throughout Europe, USA, Australia, and Japan. He spent 2007 and '08 as the drummer on Björk's Volta world tour, all the while weaving in shows and recordings on his days off with the likes of Evan Parker, Virginia Genta, C. Spencer Yeh, and Jandek.

Moving back to the U.S. in 2009, Corsano returned focus to his own projects, including a duo with Michael Flower, Vampire Belt (with Bill Nace), Rangda (with Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny) and his solo work, further expanded in its use of contact microphones and synthesizers. In 2017, he received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artist Award.

Corsano's dedication to collective improvisation has led to collaborations with all sorts of kindred spirits and his appearance on over 150 records and 1000 live performances. He's worked with, among others: Paul Dunmall (released by the label: ESP-Disk), Joe McPhee (Roaratorio), Okkyung Lee (Open Mouth), Mette Rasmussen (Hot Cars Warp Records & Clean Feed), John Edwards (OTOroku & Dancing Wayang), Sylvie Courvoisier (Relative Pitch), Nate Wooley (No Business & Astral Spirits), Jim O'Rourke & Akira Sakata (Drag City & Polystar), Merzbow (Family Vineyard), Jessica Rylan (Load Records), Nels Cline (Strange Attractors), Heather Leigh (Volcanic Tongue), Ghédalia Tazartès (Ultra Eczema), Ken Vandermark (Audiographic), and Sunburned Hand Of Man (Manhand)."

::Tashi Dorji
Tashi Dorji is among the very best improvising guitarists in the world. He builds on Derek Bailey's vocabulary in a singular way that acknowledges the tradition of guitar-as-sound-divinator without falling into free-improv genre tropes. His playing is emotional, intuitive, virtuosic and characterized by a palpable fascination with the plasticity of sound.

::Wu Fei

Wu Fei is a master of the guzheng, a massive zither with around 28 strings and plucked with both hands like a harp. She is trained at the highest level in both composition and improvisation at China Conservatory of Music and in the United States at Mills College in Oakland where she mentored with guitarist Fred Frith. She has collaborated to great critical and popular acclaim with vocalist-banjoist Abigail Washburn, guitarist Gyan Riley and more.

Please join us in this rare opportunity to welcome two world class improvisors to the Backyard@Fond Object. Tashi and Fei will each play a solo set followed by a duo improvisational set. Do not miss this special event unlike anything you have heard!!!

Justin Greene and Elizabeth Theriot explore the intersections between spoken word, experimental sound, and improvisation. They circumvent the traditional relationships associated with their mediums, poetry and percussion, through reflection on their identities as queer artists working in traditionally masculine fields. Elizabeth uses a variety of her written works, found texts on topics from hysteria to herbalism, and freely improvised material. Justin uses drums and porcelain sheets as amplifiers for a variety of objects. Their music exists between intimate, sustained, timbral manipulations and strongly juxtaposing textures.

Justin and Elizabeth are from Louisiana and currently live in Alabama. They enjoy advocating for reproductive justice, spending time with their two beautiful cats and goofy dachshund, and searching for the perfect poached egg.

Based in Kidal in the extreme Northeast of Mali, the heart of Azawad, Amanar plays a contemporar version of the classic Tuareg guitar. Often referred to as the “desert blues” sound, Amanar is at the forefront of the modern avant-garde interpretation.

Moving from the wistful nostalgia of their predecessors, their fast interpretation of desert blues draws from a menagerie of influences. Their guitars are mixed with percussion and flute, with an introduction of drum kits, electric piano, and elements of rap. Yet above all, it is a sound that remains rooted in Kidal. As other local favorites Tinariwen and Terakaft have moved on to international careers, Amanar have emerged as a favorite of the Tuareg youth, sought after in local marriages, political campaigns, and soirees.

Under the leadership of Ahmed Ag Kaedi, the group Amanar is a collective that receives and trains willing youth, reflecting an idea at the core and history of Tuareg guitar as a vehicle to transmit ideas. Ahmed’s lyrics have evolved from the ancient calls of rebellion to the need for education in the Tuareg community, critiques of the corruption amongst the elite, and calls for the construction of a large united Mali — all ideas that Kaedi calls “the real rebellion.”

Touring throughout Africa, the group performed at Festival au Desert in 2010, earning the Prix de la Revelation, earning them a European debut at the Presenze d’Africa Festival in Florence, Italy. Their first album, “Alghafiat”, a local production recorded in Kidal, was released internationally in 2010 and their songs have been featured on various compilations and broadcasts.

The band is currently in exile throughout Mali and Algeria as the crisis in the North of Mali has forced them to leave their homes.

::Ralph E. White (Austin, TX)
www.ralphewhite.com/home
"One of our foremost instrumentalists and a true hidden American treasure, Ralph White has taken the back roads in his inspired pursuit of the ancient roots of music. The "folk/noise/avant-whatever genius" (Joe Gross, Austin Statesman) has made many strange travels as an itinerant musician and laborer. Thus his intimate, nuanced musical language has slowly revealed itself, along a path that meanders from the apple orchards of British Columbia to the villages of Zimbabwe and Namibia, from the lonesome moors of Ireland to Australia, Brittany, Peru, Louisiana and beyond. There is also the influence of White's hometown of Austin, Texas, a rich musical crossroads in and of itself.

Along with Danny Barnes and Mark Rubin, White completed the original and definitive lineup of country/bluegrass mavericks (and recent Texas Music Hall of Fame inductees) The Bad Livers. He now performs his singular blend of ancient rural folk music and original songwriting as a soloist. Since touring extensively in North America and Europe, White has kept a prolific schedule of independent releases, "where borders are erased and music is the only language" (Insound). Most recently, his "Navasota River Devil Squirrel", called "a fine navigation of the American mystery zone" (Volcanic Tongue) was reissued on vinyl LP by Mystra Records/Spirit of Orr. And in late 2009 the Resipiscent label issued his improv collaboration with San Francisco sound artist Hora Flora Sound System. New releases are scheduled for 2010, including a solo album with Austin indie Monofonus. White has also self-released limited edition works and is called on for various recording projects and film scores & appearances.

In addition to his solo work, White has recorded or performed with a diverse group of folk and avant-garde musicians: Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Jandek, Jack Rose, Eugene Chadbourne, Michelle Shocked, Sun City Girls' Sir Richard Bishop, Powell St. John and Michael Hurley. He plays fiddle in traditional Cajun dance band The Gulf Coast Playboys, and, with folk singer Amy Annelle, performs in the roots country & folk duo Precious Blood."

::GRID (NYC)
"With an approach based in free jazz, GRID takes the plunge into darker, heavier, and more psychedelic realms of improvised music. The new trio, featuring Matt Nelson (Battle Trance) on saxophone, Tim Dahl (Child Abuse) on bass, and Nick Podgurski (New Firmament;Feast of the Epiphany) on drums, harnesses the clamorous spirit of fee jazz while venturing beyond its acousitc borders through the implementation of electronic processing and dirge-like tempos akin to Doom and Sludge. Noisey calls GRID “a three-way chat. It’s a conversation between musicians with differing musical opinions, but their debut album has become a shared dialogue that is as fluid as it is improvised”.

Matt Nelson:
Brooklyn-based saxophonist Matt Nelson defies categorization in his frequent solo work and involvement with bands and projects across the musical spectrum. Employing an array of traditional and extended techniques and a frequent use of electronics and feedback has allowed him to expand on his jazz background and forge a unique musical identity that is ever-present but adaptable to a wide range of music. Speaking to this is his work with Battle Trance, tUnE-yArDs, Elder Ones, Premature Burial, and GRID. An active member of the New York experimental music scene, he is often involved in a large number of other projects as well. Recent collaborators include Ava Mendoza, Weasel Walter, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Peter Evans, Louise Jensen, and many others.

Tim Dahl:
Tim Dahl is a professional electric and double bass player, vocalist, keyboardist, and composer living in New York City since 1998. He is best known as the bass player and co-composer of the noise-rock band Child Abuse and Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus. He has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan with both groups. Tim has also performed with many notable musicians, composers and performers including Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Tatsuya Yoshida, Von Freeman, Stanley Jordan, Mary Halvorson, Malcolm Mooney, Marc Ribot, Brian Chase, Hamid Drake, Elliot Sharp, Weasel Walter, Marni Nixon etc. Tim is currently living in Brooklyn and is an active member in the music scene there.

Nick Podgurksi:
Nick Podgurski maintains New Firmament; an umbrella institute for programming, composition, listening, writing, and recording (among other practices). His musical work is manifest over dozens of recordings (and innumerable performances) in varying capacities with: Feast of the Epiphany, New Firmament, Extra Life, Yukon. Collaborators include: STATS, Geryon, Castevet, Sabbath Assembly, Andrew Smiley/Matt Kanelos. He performs here as drummer alongside Matt Nelson (saxophone) and Tim Dahl (bass)."

Shortly after learning all of the songs in his cassette collection by ear, he became the first full-scholarship graduate guitar student at the San Francisco Conservatory. Gyan's diverse work now focuses on his own compositions, improvisation, and contemporary classical repertoire. Gyan has been commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, New Music USA, the Carnegie Hall Corporation, the American Composers Forum, and the New York Guitar Festival. He has performed with Zakir Hussain, Lou Reed, John Zorn, the Kronos Quartet, Iva Bittova, the Bang-On-A-Can All-Stars, the San Francisco Symphony, the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, and his father, the composer/pianist/vocalist Terry Riley. Various tours have taken him throughout Europe, Canada, Latin America and the US, both as a soloist and in various ensembles. Gyan resides in New York City and frequently performs with the duo Probosci, the trio Eviyan, and the electric guitar quartet Dither. Gyan has four solo CD titles and many ensemble/collaborative recordings, most recently working with the Tzadik Records label in New York."

::Wu Fei
www.wufeimusic.com/
wufeimusic.bandcamp.com/
"Wu Fei is a native of Beijing and a current Nashville resident. She is a classically trained composer, master of the guzheng — the 21-string Chinese zither, and a vocalist. She plays in the guzheng's vernacular — a musical language which is at least 2,000 years old, and mixes Western classical and Chinese traditions with a contemporary, idiosyncratic sound. Her early music education was at the China Conservatory of Music, but did her Master's at Mills College and laster immersed herself in the New York downtown improvisation scene at venues like The Stone, where Fei has frequently performed and curated.

Wu Fei composes for choir, string quartet, chamber ensemble, Balinese gamelan, and orchestra; her commissions range from a composition for Percussions Claviers de Lyon that premiered in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing to live performances in Paris and Tokyo for luxury brand Hermès.

Currently, Wu Fei is the composer-in-residence for Chatterbird Ensemble. She has also been commissioned by Intersection Ensemble and individual soloists globally.

In addition to her own original compositions, Fei has collaborated with many artists of different disciplines and genres ranging, from Béla Fleck, Abigail Washburn, Billy Martin (Medeski-Martin-Wood) to avant garde composers John Zorn and Fred Frith. She has taken her guzheng and music around the world and touring highlights include composition premiere at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, the MoMA in New York City, North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, Vossa Jazz in Norway, Europalia Festival in Belgium, and the Big Ears Festival in Tennessee.

Wu Fei has released two solo records and one duo record with classical guitarist Gyan Riley. Each record exhibits both her unique solo improvisational vocabulary and her craft of composing for chamber orchestras. "Wu's work evinces respect for tradition, an interest in what instruments can do, a strong sense of architecture, and good old fashioned showmanship. " Allmusic.com reviews Wu Fei's chamber work album YUAN released on Tzadik Records."

"The Participatory Music Coalition began as the sonic subcommittee of the MB Collective, a theater, performance, visual and community collective of artists integrating diverse performative traditions, especially with respect to the South Side Community Art Center and its founder, the great spirit Margaret Burroughs. Musicians of the MB collective began participating in the weekly "Sonic Healing Ministries Free Jazz Sessions" organized and headed by composer/instrumentalist and educator David Boykin. Finding fulfillment and growth through these sessions members began to meet in each others homes to experiment, compose, and practice new music.

Recognizing the spiritual importance of Black American Classical Music, Participatory Music Coalition maintains improvisation as the very core of our creative endeavors because improvisation is the doorway to the spirit-domain, and sound is the primordial vessel of healing to the world.

Our performances proceed through journeys of sound, text, movement, poetry, song, moving images, and cuisine.Both free and planned improvisational offerings will leave plenty of space for guests to contribute and share.We encourage participation by all! By thought, word, deed, and sound, we invite you to celebrate with us the divine unity of all the cosmos that music represents. We welcome your sound, your spirit, your voice and your heartbeat!"

Fond Object Records - 4th Ave

::Virtual Balboa is Zach Darrup (guitar), Evan Lipson (upright bass), and Ben Bennett (drums and percussion).

Zach Darrup is an improvising guitarist currently living in Philadelphia. During his early teenage years in the rural coal region of Pennsylvania a strange boy appeared like an angel, carrying a large cd booklet of wild musics of all sorts. This chance meeting at a pizza shop, plus tumultuous relationships with his home turf, school teachers, and other agents of law and rule enforcement led Zach to drop out and skip town, devoting himself to following music wherever it would take him--somewhere else. His techniques are informed by the musical possibilities of film language, jovial mockery and mimicry of plants, animals, and audience members, thoughtful room listening, word play, colors, and culinary experiments.

Evan Lipson (b. 1981) has operated as a musician since adolescence—intuitively seeking the liminal realms in which intellect and instinct, history and myth, and creative and destructive force intersect. Drawn towards aberrant perspectives at an early age, his formative experiences were primarily rooted in extreme and often discordant forms of rock, metal, free improvisation, modernist composition, jazz, oddball pop, soundtracks, noise, and electronic music. Massimo Ricci, of Touching Extremes writes, "Lipson easily stands among the best bassists I've heard lately, his terrifically strapping tone epitomizing the decision to really learn how an instrument works." Lipson most frequently tours with Roughhousing (including Zach Darrup and Jack Wright). He is also active with Who's Your Daddy? featuring dancer Cilla Vee/Claire Elizabeth Barratt and guitarist Davey Williams. Lipson has composed music for several films, as well as a recent collaboration with Duplex Planet-creator David Greenberger, Tyson Rogers, and Bob Stagner of the Shaking Ray Levis. He also may or may not have some degree of affiliation with an organization known as MEINSCHAFT.
www.springgardenmusic.com/Evan%20Lipson.htm

Ben Bennett has developed a unique approach to percussion which takes the lineage of free-jazz, free-improvisation, reductionism, and extended technique playing as its foundation. In searching for an expanded sonic palette, and more fluid movement between various techniques, he distilled the drumset into a small collection of drumheads, stretched membranes, and other objects which offered a wide variety of unconventional sounds from very few materials, which could be rearranged into different combinations during a performance. This aesthetic development also translates into a practical advantage, as this setup can fit into a backpack, allowing for unencumbered traveling, which Bennett has been doing actively for the past 12 years, touring North America and Europe as a soloist, and with a number of collaborators, who include Michael Foster, Jack Wright, Evan Lipson, Jacob Wick, Tashi Dorji, Leila Bordeuil, Travis Laplante, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Zach Darrup, Brandon Lopez, Nate Wooley, Aaron Zarzutski, and Arrington DeDionysio.

::Sea Ship Auricle, a weekly program on WXNA 101.5 FM welcomes filmmaker and ethnomusicologist Hisham Mayet to explore the sonic archive of French ethnomusicological pioneer Charles Duvelle. Mayet controls the archives of Charles Duvelle, a vast and invaluable catalog chronicling some of the highest musical achievements of humankind.

"Disques Ocora, a French label dedicated to capturing and publishing the sounds of folkloric culture from around the world, is held in the highest possible regard in the realms of professional and amateur ethnomusicology. Instigated in 1958 by Pierre Schaeffer, the founder of musique concrète, Disques Ocora developed a sterling reputation largely for its publication of composer and musicologist Charles Duvelle's pioneering field recordings, as well as his now-iconic photographs and graphic design.

Charles Duvelle's work is indisputably one of the most important contributions to the human understanding of the rich biodiversity of our planet's music and language. In 1977, his field recordings from Benin were selected by Carl Sagan for inclusion on the Voyager Golden Records, which were carried into outer space by the Voyager spacecraft to stand as an example of humanity's highest musical expressions for the universe's unknown listeners.

This release includes 16 tracks of archival recordings (some of which have never been published before) selected and compiled by Duvelle himself. Most of the first 13 tracks, which focus on Africa, are complete versions of truncated tracks from out-of-print Ocora LPs. The final 3 tracks are focused on material from Asia, with two long tracks that have never been released before and a complete unedited version of a previously released track.

::"Group Doueh: Oulaya's Wedding" dir. Hisham Mayet (58 min)

Sublime Frequencies presents a film featuring GROUP DOUEH:
OULAYA’S WEDDING [زفاف العيلة] is an impressionistic account of love, family, gender roles and ecstatic music in the Sahara desert. It’s an intimate portrait of a family of wedding musicians, their court of extended friends and peripheral misfits, who are giving away their eldest daughter’s hand in marriage. The film portrays the emotional and logistical maelstrom of a Sahraoui wedding. Presented are candid and sincere accounts by the residents, hosts, guests and artists that make these weddings a foundation of Saharan culture in the city of Dakhla.
Group Doueh, the most beloved family band in the Western Sahara, are the main subject of this documentary. Sublime Frequencies co-founder Hisham Mayet and his team, were Doueh's personal guests and given unprecedented access to film and record the pageantry and stunning music of his daughter's traditional Sahraoui wedding. The result is a film of warmth, humor and belonging through music in this remote and overlooked region in the midst of a rapidly changing Sahraoui culture . [Documentary, 58 min., Dir. Hisham Mayet with Cyrus Moussavi and Brittany Nugent].

-brief intermission-

::"The Divine River: Ceremonial Pageantry In The Sahel dir. Hisham Mayet (47 min)

Sublime Frequencies announces a new film by Hisham Mayet: The Divine River: Ceremonial Pageantry in the Sahel. Condensed from 40 hours of footage shot between 2007 and 2012, The Divine River is an exhilarating, hallucinatory, harrowing record of music, ritual, life and landscape along the Niger River—which the Tuareg call Egerew n-Igerewen, or "River of Rivers"— as it winds through Mali and the Republic of Niger.

Traversing 300 miles of this transitional zone between the Sahara and the Savanna, The Divine River is not a linear record of a journey so much as a phantasmagoria of visual associations that create their own emotional topography and chronology, always accompanied by music that blurs the lines between sacred and secular, past and present.

Highlights include intimate views of ecstatic dance in the painted houses of the island-dwelling Wogo; the seductive courtship rites and trance vocals of young Wodaabe men; a mesmeric Tuareg and Zarma duet for guitar and molo; Hausa griots enchanting with comsaa strings; Zarma spirit possession ceremonies; and heart-stopping footage of the Dogon mask ritual atop the Bandiagara Escarpment in the village of Endele.

True to Sublime Frequencies' "aesthetic of extra-geography and soulful experience," The Divine River refuses hasty contextualizations and rote interpretations that, far from "explaining" cultural displays, deaden viewers to the presence of mystery. Avoiding the temptation to reduce ritual to a simple matter of ends and means, its silence respects the chasm that separates concepts like "possession" from their lived reality. Rejecting the distractions of an imaginary understanding in favor of simple attention and humility, it traces the portal to deeper knowledge counseled in a centuries-old Sufi prayer: "O Lord, increase my bewilderment."

Director Hisham Mayet will be attending the screening and will conduct an after show Q+A.

And it shows in his tone which has been praised by the likes of drummer Hamid Drake and pianist Matthew Shipp.

"Bassist turned vagabond C.J. Boyd uses bass loops and voices in order to try and stop time. On perpetual tour since March 2008, movement and stasis are both at the center of his music. Weaving together improvisation with a sparse, minimalist aesthetic, Boyd creates waves of sound, worlds of provocative unlived memories through a singular approach to the upright bass and electric bass guitar that makes everything near and far.

T hough solo performance takes up the bulk of his time and effort, he occasionally tours with the improvised chamber orchestra Kurva Choir and has also released music with Chris Schlarb, Eliot Lipp, Move, and his electronic alias DJ Too Slow. Past projects include Desert Center, Rhonya, Like No Tomorrow, and he's been known to join a band for a one-off or the length of a tour, such as with Paleo (AZ), Shy Hunters (NY), Real Live Tigers (TX), and Harm (AK). All the while, he also runs a small label called Obsolete Media Objects, which has released such lovely folks as Balmorhea, Aisha Burns, Dilute, and Nelly Kate.

His non-stop musical travels have been propelled primarily by a van that runs on vegetable oil while in North America, whereas frequent European tours will find him catching trains, buses, planes, boats, and cars. But regardless of how he arrives to the gig, the music is driven by a commitment to ceaseless discovery and re-invention. His oceanic sounds provide a home for the homeless and journeys to the homebound."

8 pm ::The Limitations
Rob Stanley's group The Limitations is one of Nashville's best kept secrets that never has been secret. If Bruce Springsteen were truly inspired by Leo Kottke and Peter Lang, he might write songs like Rob's, anthemic, no-frills, working class story songs which incorporate great flatpicking runs, deep ensemble playing and sweet vocal harmonies.

9:15 pm::The Altered Statesman
Steve Poulton's mercurial soul outfit The Altered Statesman pivots around his confident and spacious songs, which leave room for relations between Ron Eoff's montanic basslines and Robert Crawford who drums tight in secondline trouble clef. TJ Larkin earns the ornithological first syllable in his surname with fingers perched on nimble frets. And Steve croons at a pace with his own unhurried, yet sure, guitar.

Dark, soothing folk music from Erik Moggridge (Epidemic; Bell Witch)

"Aerial Ruin, based in Portland, Oregon is the primarily acoustic solo project of Erik Moggridge whose “richly evocative dark folk style makes for a head-in-hand listening experience. Yes it’s dark and minimal, evoking solitude and loneliness but also magic and mesmerizing, soothing and restorative”.* Moggridge also serves as a regular guest vocalist/collaborator with Seattle’s doom duo Bell Witch, performing and recording on select songs and occasions.

Aerial Ruin, whose “soothing acoustic folk often sounds like a sun-dappled blend of Agalloch, Nechowen and Pink Floyd”** has just unveiled the new album “Nameless Sun” as of September 8, 2017. The self-released full-length explores otherworldly terrain where loss and mourning give way to the vast distances of interstellar space while personal esoteric reflection is eclipsed by the violence of stellar nuclear fusion.

Upon the release of the new album Aerial Ruin begins a lengthy US tour preceded by an appearance at Shadow Woods Metal Fest in White Hall, Maryland September 14-17. The tour then begins in Portland on the Autumnal Equinox and weaves from coast to coast through most regions of the country with dates spanning till at least late November. This continues Aerial Ruin’s dedication to constant DIY touring since 2014 in both the US and Europe while self-releasing albums in multiple formats.

The new album “Nameless Sun” was recorded by Lot 3 Audio in Portland, OR in a series of sessions between October 2016 and April 2017. During this same period Moggridge contributed vocals to the forthcoming Bell Witch album “Mirror Reaper”

Before Aerial Ruin Moggridge had an active past in the metal scene beginning with the bay area thrash/death metal band Epidemic. After garnering much attention from their demos in the pre-internet underground fanzine/tape-trading scene Epidemic released two albums on Metal Blade in the early-mid nineties. Later Moggridge went on to form Old Grandad with Will Carroll (Death Angel) and Max Barnett (ex-Hammers of Misfortune). The trio a gained a sizable cult following in San Francisco in the mid-late nineties and and into the 21st century.

With exciting many prospects on the horizon Aerial Ruin will continue to record and tour throughout 2017, 2018 and beyond..."

This approach is indebted to a wild commitment to queer politics and years of cruising contemporary and 20th century art and/or life theories. ::Kath Bloom (Litchfield, Conn.)
www.kathbloom.com/audio

Kath Bloom will be performing in her trio 'stringband' with upright bassist Evan Lipson and singer-guitarist Peggy Snow.

"For fans of the song and how to feel it. Kath Bloom (USA) is some kind of legend. She comes from a special place where country, blues and folk are made beautifully translucent and emotive. She has a special gift – her voice is delicate and tender, yet retains that raw emotion and hard worn truths that allows each sung word to be felt.

The more you hear of Kath Bloom, the more you notice it’s not just the arresting voice, but the power of the songwriting. “Beautiful” is the typical response—the kind of beauty that comes from truth, musical and the deeply lyrical. There are no good comparisons, but if you like the deep well of Emmylou Harris, the more poignant lyrics of Lou Reed, the joy of Maher Shalal Hash Baz or even Joni Mitchell, you're kinda in the right zone. In reality, she’s simply Kath Bloom: horse whisperer, vocalist, mum, songwriter and a beautiful person.

Her albums recorded with Loren Mazzacane Connors in the 70′s/80′s are rare things, full of songs that float and melt into the ether. Impossibly beautiful and hard to find on LP, but check the reissues from a few years ago . In the 90′s Kath’s music was famously featured in Richard Linklater’s film Before Sunrise. Since then she has been busy writing and recording to great acclaim. Two new albums in the last few years and she and her songs where also honoured on a tribute album featuring Bill Callahan, Scout Niblett and Mark Kozelek."

"The name X_______X was designed to be mutable—a pictogram—to mean whatever one wanted at any given moment. Mutations included Ex Blank Ex, X Charlie Manson and the Family X, and for their archival vinyl album release in 2014, X The Rolling Stones X. It is Morton's Dada-esque tendencies that lie behind the decision to name the band something that is so malleable and, therefore, so difficult to search for on the internet. "This artistic antagonism, inspired by an affinity for the Dadaist movement, has been at the heart of Mr. Morton's work — both as a musician and a visual artist — for the better part of four decades.".

X_______X flashed like a supernova in the turbulent rock scene of the late seventies, lasting only six months in their original incarnation. The band was formed at Morton's 25th birthday party. Morton, knowing he would be shortly moving to NYC said, "Hey! Let's form a band that last six months!" Attendees, Jim Ellis and Andrew Klimeyk were recruited on the spot. The first infusion included Mirror's drummer Michael J. Weldon and electric eels singer Dave E. McManus. After Dave and Michael quit, Anton (who suggested to name the band "Golden Palominos"—a name that was summarily rejected by Morton) was conscripted and Morton took over on vocals: "It made me a better musician to sing and play guitar at the same time . . . I couldn't be looking at my fingers all the time. I had to look at the mic!"

In its short 6-month career the band played out 4 times and, in this brief lifespan, provided Cleveland with "a smart and muscular take on no wave" and recorded two 45s released on Drome Records. A fake band photo with no actual members (including Morton's wife at the time, Michele Zalopany) was also circulated and appeared on the back of one of the band's two Drome Records singles.

The lineup for this tour consists of Morton (vocals/guitar) and Klemyk (vocals/guitar) joined by Craig Bell (bass) and Weasel Walter (percussion).

::Mdou Moctar (Agadez, Niger)

"In the somewhat crowded scene of Tuareg guitarists, Mdou stands apart from his peers. One of the few original singer/songwriters willing to experiment and push the boundaries of the genre, his unconventional styles have won him accolades both in Niger and abroad.

Mdou Moctar hails from Abalak, in the Azawagh desert of Niger. He taught himself the guitar at a young age on a homemade instrument. Inspired by returning Ishumar, Mdou traveled the road to Libya where he traveled and worked odd jobs. As chance had, he would meet some of the now famous guitarists and further his musical studies. He returned home with a guitar and a dream.

Rising to the status as local celebrity, in 2008 he traveled to Nigeria to record his first album “Anar” – a psychedelic electronic album of Tuareg guitar, became an instant success throughout the mp3 networks of West Africa. “Tahoultine,” one of the standout tracks, was later featured on the compilation “Music from Saharan Cellphones.”

In 2013, he released his first international album, “Afelan,” rocking and raw sessions recorded live at his hometown in Niger. This was followed by the 2014 vinyl release of “Anar.” In 2015, he starred in the first ever Tuareg language film, a fictional story of the struggle of a guitarist trying to make it against all odds in Agadez. The film continues to be screened at festivals around the world."-Sahel Sounds

The symbol of XAMBUCA is the 'x' that marks the spot appearing on every product and stemming from the likes of chromosomes to tuning forks and is a brand logo to be recognized , everywhere. One of those symbols that you've felt you've seen before but weren't quite sure where. Many derivative and copycat logos have emerged since its inception in 1995 either by mere coincidence or sheer plagiarism. XAMBUCA strives to give emphasis to its art both sonically and visually.

Elisa Faires is an experimental composer/musician specializing in vocals, electronics and improvisation. She creates soundscapes using voice along with various instruments including piano, synth, hand percussion, harmonium and effects. A classically trained musician, Faires has a background in opera, electronic music and audio engineering, and one of her mentors was electronic music frontiersman and inventor Dr Robert Moog.

Faires is an active member of the multimedia and music group 'Xambuca' and has performed and improvised with several other renowned musicians, including German electronic musician Hans-Joachim Rodelius (Cluster/Harmonia/Cluster etc.). She has composed and performed works for dance and performance art companies such as Asheville Butoh Legacy, Anemone Dance Theater, and Cilla Vee Life Arts. Faires has also pioneered sound installations and live performance art pieces, several of which have been featured at many events in conjunction with the Black Mountain Museum and Arts Center and the Asheville Arts Council. She has also performed internationally at the 'More ohr Less' festival in Lunz, Austria, as well as in Berlin and Budapest. Faires appears as a regular annual artist-performer participant at the historic Black Mountain College event known as "The Re:Happening", a yearly curated event on the grounds of the legendary Black Mountain College.

“Using magic powers similar to those that enabled Mary Ford to sing with an ensemble of her selves and Les Paul to simultaneously play multiple guitars, Elisa creates a hallway of her interacting voices. Without wasting much time, she places us in her a cappella cosmos, where we are placated without protest, reflective without resistance.”

::Colin Andrew Sheffield & James Eck Rippie (Austin, TX)
elevatorbath.bandcamp.com/album/essential-anatomies-3
Performing together for the past 16 years, Colin Andrew Sheffield (samples, processing) & James Eck Rippie (turntables, samples, processing) are an improvising duo who sculpt primarily with commercial recordings to create works interested in turning aspects of plunderphonics, glitch, and sound art into a form of abstract beauty.

James Eck Rippie (b. 1977) is a visual/sound artist originally from outside Nashville, TN, spending the last 6 years in New Orleans, and has recently returned to Austin, Texas. His recorded work has been as a turntablist . But has also worked extensively with other instruments and mediums. His focus with turntables has been creating abstract sound and concrete assemblages from various records while utilizing altered needles, turntable feedback, effect pedals, damaged records, resampling,etc. While decomposing the original sound source, Rippie’s intentions are to understand the transcending possibilities of sound as well as testing the capabilities of the turntable as an instrument. He releases his work for the Cronica Electronica (Portugal) and Elevator Bath (US) labels. And has collaborations with sound artist’s Simon Whetham (UK), Paulo Raposo (PT) and erikM (FR).

Colin Andrew Sheffield (b. 1976, El Paso TX) is a sound artist focusing on the strict re-contextualization of other commercially available recordings. His aim is to distill the essential qualities of these works and to then utilize that essence for new recordings. Usually only very brief sections of the original works are selected. These raw components are then contracted, expanded, layered, and/or otherwise processed until something new is forged. The resultant music is an atmospheric soundscape, gradually shifting and unfolding. In 1998, Sheffield founded the Elevator Bath recording label which has continually issued experimental works from a variety of artists from the United States and abroad (including Rick Reed, Tony Conrad, Merzbow, Francisco López, and many more). Sheffield has released a number of solo recordings, including 2005’s “First Thus,” his debut long-player, as well as 2009’s “Signatures” (via the Invisible Birds label), 2010’s “Slowly” (on the Mystery Sea label of Belgium), and 2012’s “Time Will Tell” (on the Quiet World label of the UK).

::Alex Keller & Sean O'Neill (Austin, TX)
elevatorbath.bandcamp.com/album/kruos
Alex Keller and Sean O’Neill have collaborated in performance and installation pieces since 2015. Using field recordings, vintage telephone test equipment, magnetic oscillators, light and space, their work has addressed the agents and artifacts of change in the urban and acoustic realms.

In 2017, they will release an LP called Kruos on the Elevator Bath label, and a CD called LCLX on the Mimeomeme label.

Alex Keller is an audio artist, sound designer, curator and teacher based in Austin, Texas. His engagement with performance, installation, and recording is an outgrowth of his interest in architecture, language, abstraction and music. One of his distinctive features as a creator is his ability to show the act of research as having an aesthetic value in and of itself.

Sean O’Neill is a multi-media artist, who explores both the visible light spectrum and the audible frequency range to determine who they influence our lived environments, and vice versa; he has a stated interest in how perception shapes the dynamics of spatiality.

"The name of this Atlanta duo implies a proper classical recital, a rigid formality.
But Scott Burland (theremin) and Frank Schultz (lap steel) don't do scripted, improvising not so much
distinct sounds as evolving eddies of sound, vapors of tones that develop and transform gracefully.
Hypnotic pulses and dreamy drones weave together to form a kaleidoscope of sounds and moods, ambient clouds
and swooning collages that are as much about texture as they are timbre, like a long-lost soundtrack
to a deep-sea documentary."

::Noise Nomads (Western Mass)

"Back when I was about six months older than I am now, I used to see these bumper stickers around town that said, “There is Nothing Like a Grateful Dead Concert.” My first reaction was to say, “Thank Fuck,” since the last Dead show I saw (Jersey City 8/6/74) pretty much blew. Then I remembered that last goddamn Dead show anyone saw was almost twenty years ago (Chicago 7/9/95) and it makes me wonder what kinda stupid pills the cars’ occupants have been snorting. ‘Cause jesus, there’re all sorts of things like a goddamn Dead show. I won’t name ’em since they mostly suck. But there are plenty of ’em. What there are not plenty of, is things like a Noise Nomads show. If you ever saw one, you know what I mean. Caveman percussion, noise and action all mooshed into a huge art-apocalypse that happens one time and then never happens quite the same way again. Jeff Hartford — Mr. Noise Nomad, himself — approaches every show like a happening, and he creates a vibe and vision that will hang in yr head and ears long after the fire has burned out (as it were). He does the same thing with his albums, of which there have been three on vinyl previously. Realizing that visuals don’t mean DICK when yr listening to a record, Mr. Hartford cuts way back on the performance hijinks, and focuses on dastard electronics. His approach on Thrasher is to offer up two extended pieces, created from oscillating tones that are knobbed into pitch variations in a way that maintains equal levels of aggression and abstraction. In the studio, Hartford approaches synths less like the ass-up twiddlers of the recent past than the wilder analog brain-scramblers of early generations. The material on Thrasher reminds me a lot of guys who felt like they were creating “pure noise” back in the ’70s. Music that when revisited later showed itself to be complicated, textural, and really quite beautiful in ways no one imagined possible when they wrote their first review of Metal Machine Music. This is a great, time-warping set of sounds. Bending both contemporary time-as-heard and historical time-as-prologue. Good stuff. Although, still, there is NOTHING like a Noise Nomads concert. Nothing."

Free-playing trio of saxophone-bass-drums featuring Jack Wright, Evan Lipson, and Chris Davis will record a live performance.

::Jack Wright (Philadephlia, PA)

Described twenty years ago as an "undergrounder by design," Jack Wright is a veteran saxophone improviser based mainly in Philadelphia. He has played mostly on tour through the US and Europe since the early 80s in search of interesting partners and playing situations. Now at 74 he is still the "Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation," as guitarist Davey Williams called him in the 80s, on the road as much as ever. He continues to inspire players outside music-school careerdom, playing sessions with visiting and resident players old and new. His partners over the years are mostly unknown to the music press, and too numerous to mention. He's said to have the widest vocabulary of any saxophonist, including leaping pitches, punchy, precise timing, sharp and intrusive multiphonics, surprising gaps of silence, and obscene animalistic sounds. He has had a book published, Jan. 2017, The Free Musics, which is becoming very popular among improvisers. A reviewer for the Washington Post said, "In the rarefied, underground world of experimental free improvisation, saxophonist Jack Wright is king". ::Evan Lipson (Chattanooga, TN)

Massimo Ricci, of Touching Extremes writes, "Lipson easily stands among the best bassists I've heard lately, his terrifically strapping tone epitomizing the decision to really learn how an instrument works."

Lipson most frequently tours with Roughhousing (featuring Zach Darrup and Jack Wright).

Past units, most of them touring groups, include Normal Love, Satanized, Wrest, Dynamite Club, Hisswig, Psychotic Quartet, Early Juniata, Fuck Your Feelings, and the Weasel Walter Trio. Lipson has toured throughout North America, as well as Taiwan and Japan. His music has been released on a number of imprints including SKiN GRAFT, UgEXPLODE, High Two, and Public Eyesore.

Lipson has collaborated with myriad artists including:

Susan Alcorn, Tim Barnes, Claire Elizabeth Barratt, Ben Bennett, Kath Bloom, Thomas Buckner, Gordan Beeferman, Gene Coleman, Eugene Chadbourne, Charles Cohen, Andrew D'Angelo, Zach Darrup, Robert Dick, Andrew Drury, Bruce Eisenbeil, Michael Evans, Josephine Foster, Col. ::Jamison Williams-Thomas Milovac Duo (Fla.)

"Florida-based saxophone player Jamison Williams says that he 'specializes in experimental deconstructionism,' a great descriptor for his exploratory improvisations and his jagged, joyous interpretations of familiar material. His performance in Portland is an extension of his many years vivisecting songs found in Disney films. He sticks with the classics—"When You Wish Upon A Star," "It's A Small World," and so on—and turns them into terrifying thrill rides of agitated chords and familiar yet warped melodies. If Banksy were as smart as he thinks he is, Williams' work would be playing on a loud loop through the artist's dark Dismaland installation." - ROBERT HAM, Portland Mercury

Thomas Milovac has appeared at multiple Jazz and Experimental music festivals region wide as well as multiple venues leading various ensembles ranging from a "Free Jazz" Orchestra to a nine-piece “small big band” as well as various duos which have performed his own arrangements and compositions and have received awards and statewide recognition for their blending of styles, creative arrangements, sonic contour, wide use of coloration, and talented playing by the featured musicians.

::Jake Xerxes Fussell (Oxford, MS)

"Durham, North Carolina singer and guitarist Jake Xerxes Fussell’s self-titled debut record, produced by and featuring William Tyler, transmutes ten arcane folk and blues tunes into vibey cosmic laments and crooked riverine rambles. Jake Xerxes (yes, that’s his real middle name, after Georgia potter D.X. Gordy) grew up in Columbus, Georgia, son of Fred C. Fussell, a folklorist, curator, and photographer who hails from across the river in Phenix City, Alabama (once known as “The Wickedest City in America” for its rampant vice, corruption, and crime.) Fred’s fieldwork took him, often with young Jake in tow, across the Southeast documenting traditional vernacular culture, which included recording blues and old-time musicians with fellow folklorists and recordists George Mitchell and Art Rosenbaum (which led Jake to music, and to some of the songs herein) and collaborating with American Indian artists (which led Jake eventually to his graduate research on Choctaw fiddlers.)

As a teenager Jake began playing and studying with elder musicians in the Chattahoochee Valley, apprenticing with Piedmont blues legend Precious Bryant (“Georgia Buck”), with whom he toured and recorded, and riding wild with Alabama bluesman, black rodeo rider, rye whiskey distiller, and master dowser George Daniel (“Rabbit on a Log”). He joined a Phenix City country band who were students of Jimmie Tarlton of Darby and Tarlton; he accompanied Etta Baker in North Carolina; he moved to Berkeley, where he hung with genius documentary filmmaker Les Blank and learned from Haight folkies like Will Scarlett (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, Brownie McGhee) and cult fingerstyle guitarist Steve Mann (“Push Boat”); he appeared on A Prairie Home Companion. He did a whole lot of listening, gradually honing his prodigious guitar skills, singing, and repertoire. In 2005 he moved to Oxford, Mississippi, where he enrolled in the Southern Studies department at Ole Miss, recorded and toured with Rev. John Wilkins, and, last year, met up with acclaimed artist William Tyler to begin recording his first solo album.

Collaborating with Tyler and engineer Mark Nevers in Nashville was a conscious decision to depart cloistered trad scenes and sonics for broader, more oblique horizons. Tyler, a guitar virtuoso known for his own compositions that untether and reframe traditional six-string forms and techniques, helmed the push boat in inimitable fashion, enlisting crack(ed) Nashville session vets Chris Scruggs (lap steel, bass, mandolin: Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Marty Stuart), Brian Kotzur (drums: Silver Jews), and Hoot Hester (fiddle Bill Monroe, Ray Charles) to crew."

::The Limitations

Folks who lament the Nashville that was and long for them good ole daze, should come out to see the Limitations equipped with jaw spatulae to scrape their collective mandibles from the checkered tiles of Betty's Grill. The vocal harmonies are incredible. Rob Stanley, Mary Ann and Scott Chase and Dennis Colby are jawdroppingly good and seemingly effortlessly so. Mary Ann has an incredible voice and sings very well in harmonies too. Scott is my top 'feel' drummer in Nashville next to Evan Scala who is preternaturally gifted in that regard for a young player, but I digress...Dennis Colby is one of the great unsung guitarists of Nashville who also ran El Rancho Goddamn recording studio offering time to such John Allingham-involved groups as the infamous Flaming Polyps. Imagine if Bruce Springsteen played guitar like Leo Kottke and rocked harder and you're in the ballpark of their group soul.

Davey Williams is a national treasure. Since the mid-'70s, as a founding member of the free improvising Raudelunas 'Pataphysical Revue and TransMuseq ensembles representing the more freewheeling side of Tuscaloosa, AL's music scene. The single recorded document by Raudelunas 'Pataphysical Revue was lauded by Mojo magazine in a list of "100 Records That Set the World On Fire While No One Was Listening." Records like this, and some self-released on the TransMuseq label, established Davey Williams international reputation as a great free improvising guitarist, a mode of playing related to his primary schooling on guitar as a teenage pupil of Alabama blues legend Johnny Shines, who himself learned guitar from the Robert Johnson. This blues is a subtext to Williams unique playing style which suggests linkages to storytelling and other melodic arteries of tradition. This 'musical humorism' also finds expression in Williams own writing and cartoons. Davey Williams has performed in many bands including Curlew, Trains in Trouble, Col. Bruce Hampton, OK Nurse, Fuzzy Sons, and more.

www.kathbloom.com/

"An exploration of the quest for identity as narrative, the album Works I-VI for solo electric bass defies tradition and expectation in its conception and execution and embraces them in its macro/micro structural form and melodic/harmonic content. Influenced by such temporally disparate sounds as those of J.S. Bach, DJ Rashad, Sun Ra, Stravinsky, Elis Regina and Mississippi John Hurt, to name a few, the sum total of this album's content could be a testament to the evocative power of all/any/every human music or experience as well as a testament to the capacity for human musicians to successfully abstract on musical forms in order to achieve an expression both original and timeless; insofar as sounding musically different or new while still evoking some of the integral pieces of the archetypical story we call the human experience. Some of those archetypes to be found in the album being discovery, loss, mystery, triumph, nostalgia, convalescence and release"

www.richard-pinhas.com/

"Composer, guitarist and electronics innovator Richard Pinhas is recognized as one of France's major experimental musicians. A pivotal figure in the international development of electronic rock music, Pinhas' stature in France is analogous to Tangerine Dream's in Germany: the father figure of an entire musical movement. The pioneering, aggressive music produced by his band Heldon during the 1970s, fusing electronics, guitar and rock, heralded the industrial and techno to come and remains today vital and unsurpassed. The 'Father' of electronic music in France is also recognized as a world-class guitarist whose "diabolical guitar work" (Progression) earns comparisons with Robert Fripp.

Pinhas received a degree in guitar at 17, and a PhD in philosophy from the Sorbonne, studying under philosopher Gilles Deleuze and writing on time and science fiction. He taught philosophy before abandoning an academic career for Heldon, his 3rd band, whose name derived from Normal Spinrad's writing. Over the course of his subsequent musical career, Pinhas' ongoing philosophical studies and interest in science fiction have fired, infused, and continually renewed his music.

Heldon released 7 groundbreaking, critically acclaimed albums between 1974-78. Simultaneous with his Heldon work, Pinhas released 5 solo albums between 1976 and 1982. All of the Heldon and Pinhas recordings from this period have been reissued by Cuneiform, in a major Heldon/Pinhas CD reissue project that the US label began in 1991. Critics have lauded these 20-year old recordings, remarking that Heldon's "trailblazing electronic pathways have rarely been eclipsed even today" (i/e)."

Al Margolis aka If, Bwana:
"If, Bwana was born on New Year's Eve 1984, making music that has swung between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and more process-oriented composition. A recent review of Margolis's work says: "Let it be declared that Al Margolis/If, Bwana is some sort of evil genius working with raw materials which are never adapted to a genre or a context, because they create one in that very moment. Those sources are radically altered up to an utterly unrecognizable state, anarchic manifestations moving in compact determination." (Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes).

"Al Margolis has been an activist in the 1980s American cassette underground through his cassette label Sound of Pig Music; was co-founder of experimental music label Pogus Productions, which he continues to run. Active under the name If, Bwana since 1984, making music that has swung between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and more process-oriented composition."

Walter Wright:
"Walter Wright is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice includes computer programming, electro-acoustic music, and video performance. His focus is on "improvisation as a way of being present in the world."

"Walter was one of the first video animators. At Computer Image Corp he animated letters, words, and titles for Children’s Television Workshop. He was a video animator for Ed Emshwiller’s Thermogenesis and Scapemates, aired by WNET’s Artists Television Workshop. Scapemates was the first computer graphics video nominated for an Emmy Award (1971). He showed his work at the first computer art conference at the Kitchen (NYC, 1973). In 1973-76, as artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center, he pioneered video performance touring public access centers, colleges, and galleries with the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer.

::Pigeons (New Austerlitz, NY)
pigeonsband.com/

Pigeons are one of the great bands in America today. Art-damaged artful dodgers of whom guitarist Pat Gubler is now a member. Rob Smith former Nashvillian plays drums in some of the other great bands of our time including the psychedelic power unit Rhyton. Right on. Wednesday Knudsen is still writing beautiful songs. If you can imagine the beautiful, at-times chaotic aspects of the Velvet Underground meeting the progressive folk of Pentangle or Fairport Convention, you're in the ballpark. This band is much more than the sum of their parts.

You will love this amazing band. This is the much hipper Outlaws rocking Florida coast cove-ins in Gary Stewart's wake.

We're honored to co-present with Third Man Books and Soft Junk Records this performance at the Sept. 10th East Side Art Stumble

::John Olson (East Lansing, MI)
John Olson is a great writer. Folks who subscribed to the Hanson/American tapes listserve may recall his endless written rants on so many great records. His always razor-sharp rhetorical wit laid on paper or spoken as his early aughts habit of making Nostradamus predictions before the show. He will read selections from his yearlong journal of daily record reviews, "Life Is a Ripoff," published by Third Man Books. This reading will be followed by a live performance.

Saxophonist Marshall Allen and leader of Sun Ra's Arkestra since Ra's passing is a living legend and a national treasure. He will appear in a small group setting with his longtime collaborator, filmmaker and saxophonist James Harrar. This "Soloriens Native Tetrad" will perform live improvisations on saxophones, wind synthesizers, drums and bass to experimental films made by Harrar. Each performance is a unique response to personally crafted images. We are thrilled to present this unique and beautiful evening of audiovisual arts.

Here is more information on James Harrar and Cinema Soloriens taken from their web site:

www.cinemasoloriens.com/Cinema_Soloriens/Welcome.html

"James Harrar plays Tenor Sax, Crumar & Akai EVI, Hulusi, Bulbul Tarang, Koto, Kora, voice and electronics.

Since 1994, In addition to continued collaboration with Marshall Allen, Harrar has performed with many talented musicians and groups within Cinema Soloriens and outside: Daevid Allen (Gong, Soft Machine), Arthur Doyle, Anne La Berge, Chris Cutler & Geoff Leigh (Artaud Beats, Henry Cow), Michael Gibbons (Bardo Pond), Cathy Hayden, Giovanni Barcella, Eric Thielemans, Charles Cohen, Yahya Abdul-Majid & Art Jenkins

James Harrar has been crafting densely lyrical film-poems since the late 1980’s exhibiting at prestigious venues all over the world such as the Museum of Modern Art, Anthology Film Archives, The Andy Warhol Museum and Yamaguchi Center for Art & Media to name a few. His films are personal in a very direct and explicit sense.

In an intimate form, Harrar attempts to imprint thoughts, dreams and conceptual ideas onto the open-minded viewer while
examining the possibilities of perception.

Throughout his career, Harrar has tried to give the viewer new visual experiences while challenging fixed notions of visual language and individual seeing. "

::Jessica Pavone (NYC)
jessicapavone.bandcamp.com/
www.jessicapavone.com/
Jessica Pavone (composer, viola, violin, el.bass) has performed in countless improvisation, avant jazz, experimental, folk, soul, and chamber ensembles since moving to NYC in 2000. She currently plays with Normal Love, in a duo with guitarist Mary Halvorson, with Anthony Braxton's ensembles and as a solo violist. As a composer, The Wire magazine praised her “ability to transform a naked tonal gesture into something special,” and The New York Times described her music as "distinct and beguiling...its core is steely, and its execution clear."

Pavone’s recent works for solo viola and voice stem from years of concentrated long tone practice and an interest in repetition, song form, and sympathetic vibration. She combines her long tone rituals with delay, understated melodies and sparse lyrical content while continuously experimenting with new forms. She is interested in the physicality of performing her somewhat larger-than-comfortable instrument and believes that cultivating physical bodies as a strong container for her thoughts is part of the creative process.

As an instrumentalist, she has personally worked with and interpreted new music by; Aaron Seigel, Andrew Raffo Dewar, Elliott Sharp, Glenn Branca, Henry Threadgill, Leo Smith, Jason Ajemian, Jason Cady, Jeremiah Cymerman, John King, Matana Roberts, Matthew Welch, Tristan Perich, Tyondai Braxton and William Parker; and, has played strings in bands such as Christy and Emily, Pure Horsehair, White Blue Yellow and Clouds, Joy Mega, and The Artificials.

Pavone has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, performing in venues ranging from international music festivals, universities, and art galleries, to community centers and basements. Her music has premiered in venues in New York City such as, Roulette, Issue Project Room, and The Kitchen, and at the Klangbad Festival in Sheer, Germany. In 2011 she was featured in NPR’s “The Mix: 100 Composers Under 40.” She has received grants and commissions from the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, the American Music Center, New Music USA for her collaboration with choreographer, Anna Sperber, The Kitchen, MATA, The Jerome Foundation, The Tri-Centric Foundation, Experiments in Opera, and the chamber music collective, Till By Turning.

Pavone’s music is available from Taiga Records, Tzadik, Thirsty Ear, Porter, Skirl, and Peacock Recordings.

"My name is AVA MENDOZA. I play guitars and stompboxes and write music. Currently I'm based out of Brooklyn, NY. I have played guitar for most of my life and been active for the last decade playing my own music and in many different groups. In any context I try to bring expressivity, energy and a wide sonic range to the music I play. I've toured throughout the U.S. and Europe and recorded or performed with a broad spectrum of musicians including singer Carla Bozulich (The Geraldine Fibbers, Evangelista), Fred Frith (Massacre, Henry Cow, Art Bears), Nels Cline, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Weasel Walter, Tune-Yards, and more. I've played on recordings released by labels Weird Forest, Tzadik, Clean Feed, NotTwo, ugEXPLODE, Resipiscent, New Atlantis, and others.

Friendly critics have called me "Oakland's avant-jazz virtuoso" (Brad Cohan, Village Voice), "a versatile and virtuosic guitarist" (The San Francisco Film Society), "a wizard on a semi-circle of effects pedals, but… equally adept with FX-less technique," (Lars Gotrich, A Blog Supreme/NPR Jazz). I was recently named one of Guitar World‘s “10 Female Guitarists You Should Know”.

My main project these days is UNNATURAL WAYS .

::Rodger Coleman
rodgercoleman.bandcamp.com
"Rodger Coleman studied piano and woodwinds through high school and went on to attend the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he picked up the electric guitar. Along with few other NEC alums and Richmond drummer Sam Byrd, he formed the punk-jazz band, UYA (a/k/a Upstanding Young Americans), and their eponymous CD was nominated for a Boston Music Award in 1991. Although the band gigged regularly around Boston and New York (documented on the 1993 Live At The Willow Volumes 1 and 2 cassettes), a proper follow-up album never materialized, although their cover of “Dancing Shadows” was featured on Rastascan’s Wavelength Infinity: A Sun Ra Tribute in 1995.

After the demise of the band, Rodger and his wife relocated to Nashville, where he built a modest home studio and continued to periodically make music with Sam Byrd, who conveniently has family nearby. A live CD, Indeterminate (Improvisations for Piano and Drums) was self-released in 2012 and a studio recording, Cosmologies, was pressed on limited edition vinyl in 2014. More recently, Perihelion, a download-only album featuring a more electronic, space-rock sound, received an honorable mention in Avant Music News’ “Best of 2016 (So Far).”

::Donkey No No (Western Mass/Feeding Tube Records)

"Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Donkey No No is a trio with guitarist Omeed Goodarzi, violin/electronics goddess Jen Gelineau, and cymbal bower Edward “Ted” Lee. Some would also count the metal donkey they carry around with them as a “member,” but I will not stoop to such levels.

The trio is bent on an improv-only approach to playing, and their previous cassettes have been about as cautiously wrought as junk pile. This new album, however, possesses a real sense of instant composition, meaning the music aligns in ways that don’t sound purely chance-based. Omeed’s guitar is a fine engine of rural-völk dreamtime, and the bowed accompaniment just seems to weave around it like a very fine spider web of sound.

Perhaps the setting of the Dream Away — a legendary utopia for woodsy bacchanals (see Rolling Thunder Review for details) — somehow grounds the three improvisors. Dunno, why or how, but the sonic effect is delightful and fully capable of floating blimp-like over every head that encounters it. Long may they rise. -Byron Coley, 2016

::Aether Jag (Providence, RI)

Bridget Venuti's long-running noise project Aether Jag, in the past, has utilized circuit-bent instruments, homemade synthesizers, bass guitars, guitars and a dizzying array of effects. In recent years, she is making her own sample-based music. She works with a Rhode Island state organization as a band director in a therapeutic setting with special needs musicians. They make amazing music together.

::Sporadic E

Miller from Harvest Team's solo project is very creative and also funny. Which is nice.

::Malocchio

Derek Schartung is a great musician. He has performed in a huge range of musical settings. Tonight you probably won't see his Furry Lewis chops or the field of guitar sound he created in Ttotals, or the prog meets hardcore/glam or uke folk strums of some of his other projects. But you will hear from his third evil eye, modular sythesis on mostly homemade gear and saxophone from Nashville's one-man Voice Crack.

::Stephen Mage

Stephen Mage is an exciting new guitarist. I love how he utilizes the vocal influence of Robbie Basho and does some unique things I haven't seen before. His musical restraint is striking as it occurs within a framework that is inherently self-indulgent.

::Justice "Grampa" Yeldham
www.dualplover.com/abela/
Sydney, Australia-based audiovisual artist who has been described as a "trumpeter trapped in a two-dimensional universe" is an accurate description of the musicality of his approach to playing his unlikely instrument of choice: a contact-mic'd pane of glass. Over the past 20 years Lucas Abela has, under his given name and various performing identities created music and interactive installations ranging from Vinyl Road Rallies (remote slot cars fitted underneath with phonograph cartridges to play racetracks made from records) to Temple of Din ( a series of multiplayer pinball machines whose flippers aim metal orbs against the necks of guitars or a Phillipine kulintang gamelan orchestra. His instrumental control of the glass pane is both impressive and apparent to any who have seen his previous Music City shows.

::Depths & Chained

Inspired by the music of Henryk Gorecki and Gyorgy Ligeti, the regal melancholy of seminal second-wave of black metal records, the work of ambient composers Eliane Radigue and William Basinski, kosmiche music, classic harsh noise and the churning, pulsing fervor of Brighter Death Now, Depths & Chained serves as an exploration of the space in which these influences can co-exist.

Pico Dorado is a game-piece for improvisation devised by filmmaker and guitarist Scott Bazar in the tradition of John Zorn's COBRA. Following is a description of PD from Bazar's site: "Pico Dorado is a video-conducted spontaneous game composition for an improvising sextet. The players are assigned 1 of 6 colors and are prompted by animated cues. The cues affect various aspects of playing such as duration, volume, tempo, timbre, as well as dividing the group into solos, duos, trios, and so forth. Pico Dorado performances are broken into 10 or 30 min rounds. Each round features a new ensemble. This is achieved by public participation encouraging musicians in attendance to learn the mechanics of the game."

"Tashi Dorji grew up in Bhutan, on the eastern side of the Himalayas. Residing in Asheville since 2000 and soaking up a vast array of music. Along the way, Dorji developed a playing style unbound by tradition, yet with a direct line to intuitive artistry. His recordings feature improvisations that spasmodically grow along tangential, surprising paths. All references break loose during a composition, as Dorji keys into his own inner world.

His compositions drag the listener into a labyrinth of warbling tones, where each sound seems to jump out and replace the eerie silence that would otherwise occupy the atmosphere. The textures remain sustained in the reverberation as the vibration of the strings dwindle and ascend. The experience is one equally disorienting and reflective, in which Dorji’s musicianship brings haunting beauty and mindfulness to the listener. After a handful of releases on various labels since 2009, Dorji presented his debut LP on Hermit Hut, the label created by Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) in 2014. Since then Tashi has released music in various formats on labels like Bathetic Records, Cabin Floor Esoterica, Blue Tapes and Marmara Records."

bio from Tatsuya's site:

"Tatsuya Nakatani is a creative artist / percussionist originally from Osaka, Japan who has released over sixty recordings in North America and Europe. Residing in the USA since 1994 he has performed countless solo percussion concerts and has collaborated with hundreds of artists in international music festivals, university concert halls, art museums and galleries. His latest project is the Nakatani Gong Orchestra, which builds community ensembles performing on multiple bowed gongs under his direction, as recently presented at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Nakatani’s constant touring fosters the raw and fresh quality in his music, which can only survive through an open willingness to share energy, culture, music and self on a global human scale. His master classes and workshops at schools and universities, emphasize his unique musical approach and philosophy in creating visceral, non-linear music.

He has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments and extended techniques. He utilizes drums, gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, intuitively primitive, expressive music of unusually strong spirit that defies category or genre. His music is based in improvised/ experimental music, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music."

::Hans Chew

"Perhaps best known for his keyboard work with other artists such as Steve Gunn, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Jack Rose, Hans Chew has established himself as a versatile singer, songwriter and performer in his own right. His 2010 debut album Tennessee & Other Stories… received four stars from Rolling Stone and was heralded by Uncut as one of the top 25 albums of the year.

A native Tennessean, Chew’s style has been described in wide fashion, with comparisons to artists like James Booker, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Feat, Nirvana, Little Richard, and Leon Russell. “My grandfather sang harmony on Sundays in a little country church quartet, then in the evenings I’d hear him pickin’ and grinnin’ that ‘high-lonesome sound’ of Jimmy Martin and Hank Williams out on the carport with his brothers. My mother turned me on to Hendrix and the Stones, but my father listened only to classical music: I knew Beethoven’s Fifth before Led Zeppelin’s fourth.”

2014 saw the release of Chew’s second LP, Life & Love, which Classic Rock magazine called “an excellent album, a further development of the sound Chew revealed on his debut…”, while Popmatters proclaimed the record “Dixie-fried rock ’n’ roll awesomeness…a barn burning smoker of a record that’s simply irresistible.”

Also a dynamic live performer, iTunes’s Music Editor sums it up: “Hans Chew cranks up the tempo and the manic rock ’n’ roll performance until it feels like you’ve landed in the early ‘70s, when Derek & The Dominos were piecing together Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs and The Rolling Stones were waiting around Nellcote to record the bits and pieces of Exile on Main St.”

Chew lives and works in New York City."

Joe McPhee and the Omnipotent Egyptians (Universal Indians)
with John Dikeman, Jon Rune Strøm and Tollef Østvang

Joe Mcphee - sax and trumpet
John Dikeman - sax
Jon Rune Strøm - bass
Tollef Østvang - drums

"Universal Indians is a trio comprised of Amsterdam-based, American saxophonist John Dikeman and the resourceful and powerful rhythm section of Wegnorian bassist Johnny Runderstuk and Talsiman Oosterpark.

This trio presents its own definition of contemporary freely improvised jazz: muscular, passionate, raw and intense music created on the spot, with no distinct leader and with tight, immediate and supportive interplay. Although informed by formative free jazz artists such as pianist Cecil Taylor, saxophonists John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Peter Brotzmann, they demonstrate clear, independent voices of their own.

Since he emerged on the creative jazz and new music scene in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Joe McPhee has been an emotional composer, improviser and multi-instrumentalist, as well as a thoughtful conceptualist and theoretician.

He is currently a member of Trio X, his own Survival Unit, and has collaborated with well known improvisers like Pauline Oliveros, Peter Brötzmann, Evan Parker and Raymond Boni. He has also guest-appeared with The Thing, Trespass Trio, and Universal Indians among many others. With a career spanning nearly 50 years and over 100 recordings, he continues touring internationally, forging new connections and reach for the music’s limits.

Skullduggery on Cleanfeed received 5 stars from All About Jazz."

"Ahleuchatistas is guitarist Shane Parish and drummer Ryan Oslance on a musical odyssey of pure imagination, limitless in influences, combining tight-knit composition with improvisation, and delivering powerful live shows. The project was founded in 2002 and has evolved organically as the muse leads through the creative sonic continuum…

About the name, two words were once married to give an identity and conceptual continuity to a musical enterprise without limits. Ah-leu-cha & Zapatistas. The first is the title of a Charlie Parker song, the second that of a revolutionary movement which began in Chiapas, Mexico in 1994. Musical revolution and social revolution combined into a single coinage. Movement and the constant outstripping of itself are what unifies all the sounds under this single name."

Saul Conrad's latest album is a Requiem mass influenced by classical music and sacred forms. Mozart's Requiem and Great C Minor Mass; Chopin's Preludes; Bach's Goldberg Variations and Mahler's last Symphony, each influenced Conrad's album. The grandiose aspects of these pieces function surprisingly well as re-set in Conrad's songs which recall classic singer-songwriter moves by writers like Bob Frank, Alexander "Skip" Spence, and the expansive counterpoint of Van Dyke Parks.

"Florida-based saxophone player Jamison Williams says that he "specializes in experimental deconstructionism," a great descriptor for his exploratory improvisations and his jagged, joyous interpretations of familiar material.

She plays zheng beautifully in the instrument's vernacular--a musical language which is 2,000 to 3,000 years old--and in a contemporary idiosyncratic, experimental dialect began during years spent at Mills College and immersed in the Downtown improvising scene which revolved around NYC clubs like The Stone, which Fei curated for the month of Oct. 2008. Given the folks Fei has collaborated with which ranges from Abigail Washburn to John Zorn, you never know who might show up to jam.

Misha Feigin astounded us with his duo with vocalist Jill Burton last year, and this time returns in a duo with accomplished cellist Jon Silpayamanant.

Misha Feigin was born and raised in Moscow, leaving behind an established career in the Moscow arts scene, when he immigrated to the United States in 1990. He is now somewhat of a bard of free improvisation, playing with the likes of Elliot Sharp, Eugene Chadbourne, Amy Denio, and the late Peter Kowald. He’s an accomplished writer with many stories to tell through his writing and music. www.sonablast.com/misha-feigin/

Jon Silpayamanant is an accomplished cellist and composer of many styles, playing with Yo-Yo Ma, Ray Price, and Hazzan Mike Stein. He is an educator at the Arts Institute and at Indiana University SouthEast, and gives workshops on improvisation at colleges, high schools, and other music festivals and events. www.boldcellist.com

Brady Sharp is a Nashville local, and plays electric guitar with extended technique, using various tools and other things at his disposal, at time fed through a laptop of designed audio algorithms. He’s played with touring artists coming through Nashville at various times, including Gino Robair, Chris Cutler, Ladonna Smith, the late Peter Kowald, and many more.

Kevin Brown (Bath, England)

At age 14 Kevin Brown saw Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Muddy Waters perform on television and was immediately hooked on the blues as a rabid fan and dedicated performer. Nearly 15 years later he met Son House while busking. This chance meeting led to Brown briefly taking lessons with Son House.

Brown continued to perform for awhile, choosing eventually to teach drawing in art school and forgo the wild nightlife for family. During this period he was 'discovered' by the producer Joe Boyd in 1982. Boyd has a legendary ear for talent--the list of great acts managed or produced by Boyd is fairly staggering...it includes Tomorrow, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, The Incredible String Band, James Booker, Joseph Spence to name a few. Boyd released two lps by Kevin Brown on his Hannibal label. Brown also has worked on acclaimed albums by Mark Knopfler and in duet with African kora master Moussa Kouyate.

Brown also had a fruitful musical relationship with the late extraordinary Nashville-area country guitarist Sam Jacobs. It was an honor to present the two of them together just last year.

We present this concert in memory of, and in tribute to, the great Sam Jacobs.

-- FLANDREW FLEISENBERG:: (Percussion; Philadelphia)

Flandrew Fleisenberg creates ritual grids out of incidental sound and ritual movement. Perhaps a playful pisstake on Tom Johnson's action with Nine Bells and some sand is Flandrew Fleisenberg's expressed relationship with ping pong percussion an incidental wicker gamelan played on depressed bongos. .

From Fleisenberg's bio:
"Fleisenberg is a player of objects. Drums only fall peripherally into his spectrum, while he is mostly fascinated in coaxing out the inherent material characters of "mundane things". These wide manipulations of external implements draw an aural architecture within the
performance space as the embodied performer moves within it. Fleisenberg's movement actions in combination with his material conjuring, creates a discourse inside of a
constantly breathing tactile space."

Jill Burton is an American improviser, extended vocalist, dancer, performance artist and energy worker. Active in the American improv scene since the early 1970s, she has lived and worked all over the country, including a ten-year stint in the 1980s as part of the downtown East Village experimental arts community, and six years in Sitka, Alaska, where she worked with Tlingit storytellers providing musical accompaniment for their healing stories. Burton is unusual for a musician in that her work is ephemeral, in-the-moment, and therefore recordings of her work are rare. She has collaborated with many notable experimental musicians and dancers, including LaDonna Smith, Davey Williams, Jane Scarpantoni, Judy Dunaway, David First, Rain Worthington, Gino Robair, Jack Wright, and Scott Walton

Misha Feigin was born and raised in Moscow and is known as one of Russia’s premier guitarists. He released two albums on the state label Melodiya. Since moving to the U.S. in 1990, Misha has been featured on National Public Radio and BBC. He has toured throughout North America and Europe releasing ten CDs in America and Germany, and two in Great Britain on Leo Records.
Misha shared the stage/recorded with Elliot Sharp, Dave Liebman, Eugine Chadbourne, Ken Vandermark, Peter Kowald, LaDonna Smith, Davey Williams, Ami Denio, and Serguei Letov. Misha Feigin performed on many prestigious stages such as Moscow’s Concert Hall Russia, Washington’s Kennedy Center, Vancouver Jazz Festival, and Winnipeg Folk Festival. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky.

FMRL Presents An Evening with Ustad Lakha Khan

FMRL Presents An Evening with Ustad Lakha Khan

Oct 10, 9:00pm

Emma Bistro 11 Lea Avenue, Nashville, TN Map

Ustad Lakha Khan, from the Rajasthan province in the northwest of India near Pakistan, is a master musician and instrument builder of the sindhi sarangi, a 37-string bowed instrument whose name means "one hundred colors" referring to the wide ranging tonal capability of the instrument.

Khan is a virtuoso performer whose vocal and instrumental abilities hearken to a bygone era wherein vocalists performed in primarily unamplified settings, and so developed the ability to sing and project at an astonishing level. He is accompanied by his son, Dane, on dholak, a two-headed Indian drum which is played on its side.

Folks who witnessed Khan's last Nashville appearance in the beautiful Downtown Presbyterian Church, will be happy to know that wonderful concert was recorded by three people and is now available as a compact disc on Amarrass Records.

Amarrass Records should be applauded for their efforts in recording Indian musicians whose traditions are quickly fading in the modern age. We're very lucky and humbled to be able to present this show.

Please join us in a local celebration of Lakha Khan's "Live in Nashville" CD release.

FMRL Presents Kevin Brown & Sam Jacobs with deli

FMRL Presents Kevin Brown & Sam Jacobs with deli

Sep 19, 9:00pm

Emma Bistro, 11 Lea Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee Map

-Kevin Brown & Sam Jacobs

www.mykevinbrown.com/

British slide guitarist Kevin Brown and Spring Hill TN-based country guitarist Sam Jacobs struck up a musical partnership in the mid-1980s when the pair met in Austin TX. The casual chemistry in their playing produced a strong enough reaction that they still get together to record decades later. Their music is sublime country music filled with great chord voicings and subtle interplay, music of listening for listeners.

Their individual modesty belies the strength of their playing which has drawn, in Brown's case, accolades from Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Albert King, and famed producer Joe Boyd who released several records by Brown for Hannibal Records.

Folks like Sam Jacobs are, simply put, the sort of people who make Nashville a great place to be. He's a master woodworker and creates beautiful tuned mallet percussion instruments. Rooted in jazz and doowop, Jacobs' guitar playing is understated and supportive and yet he played lead on albums like the pair by songwriters Felice and Boudleaux Bryant which feature rhythm by Chet Atkins and Lenny Breau.

This is a rare opportunity to see a fading tradition in Nashville and to witness a world master of slide guitar perform.

-deli

deliplays.bandcamp.com/

Deli Neblett is a multi-instrumentalist based in Nashville TN. Her music is, to borrow a phrase, a surrealistic pillow, a soothing place for the physical weight of one's head while supporting the stream of visions excited in the listener's relaxed, unconscious mind. Fans of Linda Perhacs "Parallelograms" album will find much to love about deli's beautiful voice and her remarkable facility with melodic counterpoint and counterrhythm.

Aug 31, 8:00pm

Emma Bistro 11 Lea Avenue, Nashville TN Map

$10/Advance, $12/At the Door

-Sir Richard Bishop - www.sirrichardbishop.net/

Sir Richard Bishop,like Cameo, is a knight of the sound table. Comparisons to Larry Blackmon end there. His discography is both diverse and extensive in a variety of contexts--as a member of psychedelic ethnic forgers Sun CIty Girls with his brother Alan and Charles Gocher; in VU-related garage band Paris 1942 with brother Alan and drummer Moe Tucker; creating Arizonan laundryroom exotica with Eddy Detroit; reprising Square Nine's strange surf-bowed tsunamis with Maybe Mental's David Oliphant; creating blistering trio improvisations with Chris Corsano and Ben Chasny in Rangda; and performing nimble-fingered hothouse jazz tinged with eastern modalitites as a solo artist, owing as much to Django Reinhardt as to Omar Khorshid.

-Tashi Dorji - tashidorji1.bandcamp.com/

Tashi Dorji is a Bhutanese free improvising guitarist based in Asheville, North Carolina. While attending high school in Bhutan he saw the movie, "The Thing Called Love," set in Nashville at the Bluebird Cafe. Years later, he came to Nashville and tried to go to the Bluebird Cafe, where songwriters go to get discovered, only to find it was closed that day. Tashi Dorji's guitar improvisations are spontaneous responses to a wide range of music he's absorbed from around the world, but transformed into a personal style that avoids referentiality and folk-underpinnings. You won't likely hear overt traces of Bhutanese folk melodies, but you may hear a six-stringed mockingbird fly nimbly with fingers stretched wide as Derek Bailey or Lenny Breau.

-Tate Eskew - www.tateeskew.com

Tate Eskew has more than 20 years experience as a sound engineer, musician, and software engineer. He uses this experience and his fervent interests in ecology, regenerative design, and reconnecting with his own Cherokee ancestry to create a linkage between technology and nature through music. His process employs code-writing to create his own unique guitar sounds; using the studio as an instrument to create timbrally rich sonic building blocks; and finally playing the guitar to combine these units into delicate, occasional textures, which change with every performance.

FMRL Presents - Dark Tips/Haint Whoop

FMRL Presents - Dark Tips/Haint Whoop

Aug 19, 8:00pm

Emma Bistro 11 Lea Avenue, Nashville, TN Map

It is our distinct honor to present on August 19th at Emma Bistro, 11 Lea Avenue:

-Dark Tips

Dark Tips conjure advice from the underworld through Jessica Pavone's processed viola and Raquel Bell's analog organ and both performers' vocals.

feeldarktips.tumblr.com/

Jessica and Raquel performed together (with Evan Lipson) in the incredible art-noise-punk group Normal Love, named for Jack Smith's 1963 underground masterpiece of indeterminate cinema.

Jessica has performed in groups led by Anthony Braxton, Lawrence "Butch' Morris, Matana Roberts, Henry Threadgill, William Parker, Taylor Ho Bynum and in a remarkable duo with guitarist Mary Halvorson. She is also an accomplished composer, having received grants and commissions from the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, American Music Center, The Jerome Foundation and more.

www.jessicapavone.com/

Raquel is a visual artist and multi-intstrumentalist (guitar, bass, keyboards) with a stunning voice, most evident perhaps in her rock band Mesiko. Raquel also has extensive experience in live theatrical soundtracking and sound design having worked on productions including Harry Partch's "Oedipus Rex"; a Louisville adaptation of Hamlet set in a 1920s river town and featuring music by The Slow Charleston featuring Bonnie Prince Billy; and installations and performances by visual artist Daphane Park.

-Haint Whoop (Chattanooga, TN)

FMRL will host the premiere performance of Haint Whoop, a duo comprised of Evan Lipson (acoustic upright bass) and Bob Stagner (percussion).

Evan Lipson is a monster on the upright bass as anyone who attended his trio show with Jack Wright at Betty's a few years back can attest. He's an integral part of the vibrant arts community in Chattanooga where he moved to start a tiki bar with the late Dennis Palmer of Shaking Ray Levi Society. As mentioned above, he also played bass in Normal Love.

Bob Stagner is an inspiring drummer and force of nature in the Chattanooga arts community. Through his pioneering free improvisation duo Shaking Ray Levi's Society, he and Dennis Palmer created a distinctly Southern axis of activity bringing high level musicians like Derek Bailey, Borbetomagus, and more into the region. Bob doesn't just play 'free' as his background playing hard country and honkytonk with Roger Alan Wade and his current regular gig as drummer with Annie Sellick in the Uptown Big Band will attest. He also works with The Rhythmic Arts Project, a music therapy organization which uses percussion instruction to empower disabled individuals to succeed in other areas of life.
